A major food recall has been issued across Canada for several hummus products that could pose a serious health risk to people with peanut allergies. Pattison Food Group Ltd. is recalling hummus under the brands Buy-Low Foods, Nesters Market, and Save on Foods. These products may contain peanuts, which were not listed on the labels.
This recall came after food safety testing confirmed the presence of peanuts. The test was done by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Anyone with a peanut allergy who eats these items could face serious or even life-threatening reactions.
The recalled hummus was sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Yukon.
The recalled products include different flavours like regular hummus, pesto, spicy Moroccan, truffle, masala, and tapenade. These came in various sizes between 200 g and 400 g. Each of these has “Best Before” dates from March 30, 2025, to April 9, 2025.
Stores that sold the affected hummus include:
- Buy-Low Foods (only in British Columbia)
- Nesters Market (British Columbia and Alberta)
- Save on Foods (sold in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Yukon)
As of now, no one has reported getting sick from these products. But the warning is still serious for anyone with a peanut allergy. People should not eat these hummus products if they’re allergic or sensitive to peanuts. Doing so could cause hives, swelling, stomach issues, or even a life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.
Customers are being asked to either throw away the recalled hummus or return it to the store where they bought it. It’s important to check the UPC codes and best-before dates to see if your product is on the recall list.
If someone has already eaten the hummus and feels unwell, they should get medical help right away.
Food allergies can vary in severity. Reactions can be as minor as a rash or as dangerous as trouble breathing or loss of consciousness. People with peanut allergies must be especially careful, as even small traces can be harmful.
This recall highlights the importance of clear food labeling. It also shows why food testing is essential to keep people safe.
Health officials are urging consumers to check their fridges. Any product that matches the recall details should not be consumed. Safety should always come first, especially when it comes to allergies that can cause severe reactions.
The recall only affects hummus with specific UPC codes and best-before dates. Not all hummus products from these brands are affected. If unsure, it’s safer to contact the store or discard the product.
This warning is meant to prevent harm and keep people with food allergies safe. It also reminds everyone to always read food labels before eating.
