What began as a light-hearted April Fools’ idea has now turned into something real. The Ingka Group, which runs IKEA stores worldwide, has teamed up with Chupa Chups to create a unique candy inspired by the famous Swedish meatball.

This special lollipop, which carries the flavour of IKEA’s well-known dish, will arrive in stores this June. Customers in Canada and other countries will get a chance to try it for free.

From Viral Idea to Store Shelves

The idea first appeared on April 1 as a playful announcement that caught people’s attention around the world. Many reacted with curiosity and excitement, which encouraged the companies to bring the concept to life.

Now, the meatball-inspired lollipop stands as a fun example of how a simple joke can turn into a real product that people can enjoy.

"On April 1st, we invited people to imagine a meatball lollipop. And we couldn't help but take it one step further – especially after the enthusiastic response," said Javier Quiñones, Commercial Manager at Ingka Group. "Together with Chupa Chups, we are now bringing a playful take of that idea to life. It is a fun way to celebrate our love of food, and to show that even a simple joke can turn into something real, bringing people in surprising ways."

A Unique Blend of Flavours

The new candy combines the idea of a classic sweet with the taste of Swedish meatballs and their well-known lingonberry pairing. Chupa Chups worked on creating a flavour that reflects both the savoury and slightly sweet notes people associate with IKEA meals.

This unusual mix aims to offer something different while still feeling familiar to customers who enjoy traditional lollipops.

Limited Edition and Free to Try

In total, about one million of these lollipops will be made and shared across IKEA stores worldwide. However, customers will not find them for sale.

Instead, visitors can try them free of charge during their store visits in June. IKEA plans to share more details soon about when and how Canadians can get their hands on this limited treat.

Why This Idea Appeals to Canadians

Food plays an important role in bringing people together, and IKEA continues to highlight this through its in-store experiences. Recent findings show that many Canadians enjoy sweets, while others like trying new and different foods.

This combination makes the meatball lollipop especially appealing. It offers a playful twist while also connecting to familiar flavours and memories.

" When IKEA invited us to explore a lollipop inspired by their iconic Swedish meatball, we were immediately intrigued. At Chupa Chups, we are always looking for new ways to surprise and delight people – it's part of our 'Forever Fun' spirit. This limited-edition lollipop is our playful tribute to a flavour that people all over the world associate with IKEA, reimagined in a way only Chupa Chups can do," said Martin Hofling, Global Marketing Manager, Chupa Chups.

A Fun Experience for Shoppers

The launch adds a sense of fun to the shopping experience. By offering something unexpected, IKEA hopes to create moments that customers will remember and enjoy.

This collaboration shows how brands can connect with people in simple and creative ways, turning everyday visits into something a little more special.
