On Tuesday, Google introduced its latest Pixel smartphones, showcasing a strong focus on integrating artificial intelligence into their devices. This announcement was a part of Google’s effort to stay ahead in the tech race, especially as competitors like Apple prepare for their new releases.
The new Pixel phones come with several exciting features driven by AI technology. One standout feature is exclusive to Pixel devices: users can now search for information directly from screenshots. Additionally, Android users can access Google’s Gemini chatbot as an overlay while using other apps, allowing them to ask questions or generate content seamlessly.

Rick Osterloh, Google's senior vice president of devices and services, emphasized that the company is moving beyond mere promises and is now delivering tangible, helpful AI capabilities. At the event held at Alphabet’s Bay View campus in Mountain View, California, Osterloh declared, “We’re fully in the Gemini era,” highlighting the shift towards practical AI integration.

This event marked a departure from Google’s traditional autumn announcements, with the new Pixel models being revealed earlier than usual. This change reflects Google's strategy to stay competitive with rivals. Apple, for instance, has announced that its upcoming devices will feature new AI-powered functions, including integration with ChatGPT, the chatbot from Microsoft-backed OpenAI.

During the event, Google demonstrated various new features of the Gemini AI, including a voice conversation function. However, there were a few hiccups, such as difficulties in using Gemini to cross-reference a concert poster with a calendar app.

The Pixel 9 series includes two models: the Pixel 9 with a 6.3-inch display starting at $799 and the larger Pixel 9 Pro XL with a 6.8-inch display. The Pixel 9 Pro, featuring enhanced camera capabilities, and the foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold are expected to ship in September. Preorders for these new models began on the day of the announcement.

Google aims to address two key areas with its new AI features: better organization of users' lives and improved content creation. IDC analyst Linn Huang noted that Google has successfully tackled both of these aspects with its new offerings.

Despite these advancements, Google's market share remains relatively small compared to its competitors. As of the second quarter of 2024, Google holds less than 1% of the global smartphone market, trailing behind Samsung and Apple. In the U.S., it is the fourth-largest smartphone maker with a 4.5% share.

Google’s Pixel phones also serve as a platform to showcase new developments in its Android operating system, which is used by various manufacturers worldwide. The company has also updated its smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 3, which now includes a “Loss of Pulse” feature capable of detecting heart stoppage and contacting emergency services. This feature will initially be available in the UK and EU.

Additionally, Google announced a new content partnership with Peloton, allowing subscribers to Google’s Fitbit Premium service to access a library of Peloton’s training classes.
