2024 brought an unexpected yet rewarding financial year, with the S&P 500 index achieving a 25% return despite challenges like high interest rates and rising unemployment. As the year concludes, the big question for investors is: What lies ahead for 2025?
Experts on Yahoo Finance’s Stocks in Translation podcast shared their predictions, offering guidance on areas to monitor in the coming year.

Federal Policies and Economic Impact

The incoming administration led by President-elect Donald Trump may shake up the financial landscape. Economists highlight potential risks tied to proposed policies on tariffs and deportation. Joe Brusuelas, RSM’s chief economist, warned that aggressive interest rate cuts combined with labour market contractions could lead to inflation and long-term interest rates exceeding 5%.

Industries like construction, retail, manufacturing, and leisure could face challenges under these policies, making it crucial for investors to weigh their potential market implications.

Exploring Beyond Tech

Tech stocks dominated 2024, with the Nasdaq Composite soaring over 30%. However, experts caution against over-reliance on this sector. Callie Cox, chief strategist at Ritholtz Wealth Management, advised investors to explore “unloved” sectors that offer value. “Taking profits from high-performing stocks and rotating into more balanced areas ensures sustainable portfolio growth,” she emphasized.

Cyclical Stocks and Economic Growth

Kristina Hooper, Invesco’s global market strategist, painted an optimistic picture for 2025, predicting a resurgence in economic activity. This could drive significant gains in small-cap and mid-cap stocks, particularly in cyclical sectors that respond to economic shifts. Hooper also anticipates promising performance from international equities as global markets align with the economic recovery.

Cryptocurrency: A High-Stakes Opportunity

Cryptocurrency remains a volatile yet rewarding option. Bitcoin, with an average annual growth of 150% despite massive draw downs, continues to attract attention. Real Vision CEO Raoul Pal noted, “It’s an asset that delivers exponential returns, requiring only small investments to yield significant gains.” His insights underline why tech leaders who retain their equity often amass vast wealth.
