Experts Predicted the S&P 500 Would Slow Down in 2024, But Its Rally Surprised Everyone – Bloomberg

December 30, 2024 Tags:

The S&P 500 Index stunned Wall Street in 2024, defying expectations of a slowdown after its remarkable 2023 performance. Despite predictions of modest gains, the index surged, achieving a 25% increase this year, its strongest consecutive rally since the dot-com boom of the 1990s.
At the start of 2024, leading forecasters from firms like Bank of America and Goldman Sachs predicted only slight growth for the market, especially as artificial intelligence breakthroughs fuelled tech stock gains in 2023. However, these forecasts were shattered by January, as the S&P 500 outpaced year-end targets and continued climbing.

Julian Emanuel of Evercore ISI, who initially anticipated a minor market dip, later revised his projections, aiming for a year-end target of 6,000. “Trends can outlast expectations,” he remarked, reflecting the market’s unexpected resilience.

The Economy’s Role

The post-pandemic economy played a crucial role in sustaining the rally. Despite the Federal Reserve raising interest rates to their highest in over 20 years, economic growth persisted, boosting corporate profits. Tech giants such as Apple, Amazon, and Nvidia thrived, driven by excitement surrounding AI. Additionally, Donald Trump’s re-election brought promises of tax cuts and business-friendly policies, further invigorating the market.

This unexpected growth confounded even bearish strategists. Morgan Stanley’s Mike Wilson, known for his cautious stance, shifted to a bullish outlook by May. Similarly, JPMorgan’s Marko Kolanovic, who predicted a steep decline, left the firm mid-year after revising his bearish forecasts.

The Tech-Led Surge

Much of the S&P 500’s gains were attributed to the “Magnificent Seven” tech stocks, including Meta and Alphabet, which accounted for a significant portion of the index’s rise. Dubravko Lakos-Bujas, head of market research at JPMorgan, acknowledged missteps in predicting their growth but now foresees the S&P 500 reaching 6,500 in 2025, fuelled by a more lenient Fed and economic stability in China.

Challenges and Concerns

Despite the euphoria, some analysts worry about inflated valuations, especially in the AI sector, where doubts about long-term viability persist. Trump’s policies, including tariffs and tax cuts, pose potential risks, such as rekindling inflation or disrupting global trade.

Nonetheless, optimism prevails. All 19 strategists tracked by Bloomberg predict the S&P 500 will at least maintain its current levels in 2025, with the most bullish forecasting a 19% rise.

Binky Chadha of Deutsche Bank projects the index will hit 7,000 by 2025, citing sustained economic growth and low unemployment. He advises investors to stay the course, as market dips often rebound quickly.
