The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled 60 types of baked goods, including various doughnuts, due to possible listeria contamination. The recall affects around 2 million products manufactured by FGF Brands, a company that supplies pastries to retailers across the U.S. and Canada.

The recalled items include filled and flavored doughnuts, cinnamon sticks, French crullers, and fritters. Some of these products were also sold at Dunkin’. According to reports, the recalled goods were produced before December 13, 2024. The recall was initially announced on January 7 but was later classified as a Class II recall, meaning the contaminated products could cause temporary or medically treatable health issues. However, the risk of severe health consequences is considered low.

What Consumers Need to Know

The FDA has not provided specific instructions for consumers who may have purchased the affected products. FGF Brands has not yet issued a public statement, but customers can contact the company by phone or email for more information. A complete list of the recalled products is available on the FDA’s official website.

Understanding Listeria and Its Risks

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause a serious foodborne infection known as listeriosis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria infections are particularly dangerous for older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems.

Listeria is one of the deadliest foodborne illnesses in the U.S. The CDC estimates that around 1,600 people are infected each year, with approximately 260 deaths. The infection can lead to severe complications, including miscarriage, stillbirth, and life-threatening conditions in newborns.

Symptoms of Listeria Infection

People infected with listeria may experience symptoms such as:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Seizures
  • Diarrhea and other digestive issues

In severe cases, listeria can cause life-threatening infections. Pregnant women who consume contaminated food may suffer from pregnancy complications, including premature delivery or stillbirth.

What to Do If You Experience Symptoms

Those in high-risk groups who develop flu-like symptoms within two months of eating possibly contaminated food should seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics can help prevent serious health issues.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and consumers are advised to check the FDA’s website for updates.
