Elon Musk has introduced Grok 3, a new AI model that he claims is more advanced than ChatGPT and DeepSeek.

Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has officially launched Grok 3, its latest artificial intelligence model, which he claims surpasses leading competitors like OpenAI’s GPT-4o, Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude 3.5, and China’s DeepSeek V3. Announced during a live event on Musk’s social media platform, X, the model boasts advanced reasoning, improved coding capabilities, and enhanced search functions.

Grok 3’s Features & Capabilities

According to xAI, Grok 3 performs better at math, science, and programming benchmarks than its rivals. The model introduces a “big brain” mode for tackling complex problems, along with improved web search through a feature called "deep search." Additionally, Grok 3 can generate and code online games, making it more versatile than previous versions.

Users can access Grok 3 by subscribing to X’s “Premium+” plan, which costs $40 per month, or directly through the Grok standalone website and app. The release marks a significant step for xAI as it competes against major AI firms that are rapidly expanding their models and investing in powerful data centres to drive AI innovation.

Musk’s AI Ambitions & The OpenAI Rivalry

Musk has been vocal about his vision for AI, aiming to challenge industry leaders and shape the future of artificial intelligence. He revealed that Grok 3 was built using 10 times the computing power of its predecessor, Grok 2, thanks to xAI’s new data centre in Tennessee. While he acknowledges that Grok 3 is still in a “beta” phase, Musk promised rapid improvements.

A major highlight of the event was Musk teasing an upcoming “voice mode” for Grok 3, allowing for natural conversation similar to ChatGPT’s interactive feature. This move signals xAI’s push to create more intuitive AI models that enhance user experience.

However, Musk’s biggest battle in the AI space is with OpenAI. Just last week, he led a group of investors in a $97 billion bid to acquire OpenAI, an offer that was ultimately rejected by the company’s board. Musk has repeatedly criticized OpenAI for prioritizing profit over its original mission of benefiting humanity. He has also pushed for more transparency in AI development, urging OpenAI to open-source its technology.

Will Grok 3 Be Open-Source?

When asked if xAI would release Grok 3’s code to the public, Musk stated that the company would make Grok 2 open-source once Grok 3 is stable. However, he did not confirm whether Grok 3 itself would follow the same path. This raises questions about Musk’s commitment to open AI development, especially as the competition among tech giants continues to escalate.

With Grok 3’s launch, Musk is making a bold statement in the AI industry, challenging the dominance of OpenAI and other leading firms. As AI continues to evolve, the race to create the most powerful and accessible models is far from over.
