Samsung's Unpacked event, known for its blend of entertainment and technological innovation, took a different turn this year by putting a spotlight on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into their latest Galaxy phones. The central theme of the event was the introduction of Galaxy AI, a new AI model developed collaboratively with Google's Gemini.
Galaxy AI, integrated into every Samsung Galaxy S24 model, boasts on-device and cloud-based capabilities. These include language detection, translation, image creation, and coding, all powered by Google's Gemini family. From text-based tools to audio translation, the AI model is deeply embedded in various aspects of the new phones.
Key features of Galaxy AI were unveiled during the event:
1. Circle to Search with Google: The traditional long-press of the home button on Android has been reimagined on the Galaxy S24. It now triggers a screen overlay allowing users to tap or circle an object for an image-based Google search. The results are presented on top of the existing screen or app, providing a seamless user experience.
2. Live Translate: Galaxy AI facilitates real-time translations during phone calls, both audible and transcribed. This on-device feature ensures a smooth communication experience, with both parties understanding each other in their spoken language.
3. Transcript Assist: In the Samsung Notes app, Galaxy AI can transcribe, translate, and summarize voice memos and text. Users have the flexibility to modify how the summary is presented, whether in bullet points or paragraphs.
4. Generative Edit: Similar to Google's Magic Editor, Galaxy AI allows users to modify images by long-pressing or circling subjects. This includes moving, resizing, or removing objects from the background. Generative fill, powered by Google's Imagen 2, enhances image editing capabilities.
5. Chat Assist: Galaxy AI assists users in crafting messages by suggesting alternative phrasings in different tonalities, ranging from casual to formal. This feature is particularly helpful when users are unsure of how to express themselves.
Samsung emphasizes that every Galaxy AI feature, except those specific to camera hardware, will be available across all three S24 models. It's essential to note that Galaxy AI does not replace Bixby, Samsung's virtual assistant.
Samsung Smart Ring
In a surprising move, Samsung also teased its entry into the smart ring market during the Unpacked event. While details about the capabilities of the smart ring were limited, previous trademark filings and analysis of Samsung's Galaxy Wearable APK hinted at the development. Positioned in a market dominated by the Oura Ring, Samsung will need to deliver a smart ring that excels in fundamental health tracking while offering unique features to attract both Samsung and non-Samsung users. The success of this venture depends on delivering a product that not only meets expectations but also introduces compelling innovations in the smart ring landscape.
