Dark clouds covered Calgary as a thunderstorm passed through on Tuesday afternoon. Global News

Alberta is facing another day of dangerous weather this Wednesday. A large part of the province, from the far northwest down to areas just north of Lethbridge, is under weather watches and warnings.

Thunderstorms moving in

Experts have warned that slow-moving thunderstorms are forming near the foothills. These storms are expected to move east through the day. They could bring heavy rain, large hail, and very strong winds.

Damage could be serious

The hail could be big enough to hurt people or damage homes and cars. Winds might become strong enough to break tree branches, damage buildings, or even flip vehicles. People living in the warning areas should stay alert and take shelter when needed.

Tornadoes and funnel clouds possible

The weather department also said some of these storms could produce funnel clouds or even tornadoes. These are rare but dangerous. People are urged to take cover immediately if they see funnel clouds or hear thunder nearby.

City skies already turning dark

On Tuesday, dark clouds rolled over Calgary during a powerful thunderstorm. The sky turned almost black, reminding residents of how quickly conditions can change during a storm.

Serious storm hit Okotoks earlier

Last Saturday, a severe storm brought damaging winds and hail to the town of Okotoks. The hail caused property damage and showed how intense Alberta’s summer storms can be.

What you should do

If you hear thunder or see lightning, go inside right away. Avoid open fields, high ground, and standing under trees. Stay away from windows. Make sure your pets and family are safe indoors. If you’re driving, pull over safely and wait until the storm passes.

Keep an eye on the latest alerts and updates. Conditions can change quickly. Warnings may be issued with little notice, especially if funnel clouds form.

Stay prepared

It’s a good idea to keep flashlights, extra batteries, water, and non-perishable food ready during storm season. Power outages can happen if strong winds damage power lines.

Anyone in areas under a warning should be ready to act quickly. Safety should always come first during severe weather.
