Ketchup fans now have a new way to enjoy their favorite condiment — in a smoothie. Heinz has partnered with Smoothie King to create the Tomato Ketchup Smoothie, a fruity and tangy drink made with Heinz Simply Ketchup. The drink goes on sale August 6 for a limited time.
The unusual recipe combines açai sorbet, strawberries, raspberries, apple juice, and a splash of ketchup. The result is a sweet, tart, and slightly savory flavor with a tomato twist. Heinz points out that tomatoes are technically a fruit, making them a surprisingly fitting smoothie ingredient.
Where to Find It
The Tomato Ketchup Smoothie will be sold at select Smoothie King locations in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Miami, and New York. Each one costs $5.70 and will be available only while supplies last.
A special pre-launch tasting took place August 5 in New York City. Guests sampled the smoothie alongside tomato-themed snacks, fresh flowers, and custom tote bags.
Part of a Bigger Food Trend
This collaboration taps into a growing food trend — savory drinks. More beverages are now blending ingredients like miso, mushrooms, seaweed, and tomatoes with sweet flavors. Tomatoes, in particular, are becoming more popular in drinks for their umami depth and natural acidity.
Recent creations like tomato water martinis have shown how versatile the fruit can be. The Heinz and Smoothie King partnership takes that idea further, offering a fully blended drink with complex flavors.
Inside the Creation
Angie Madigan, vice president of marketing at Kraft Heinz, called the ketchup smoothie “provocative” and said the goal was to make a delicious fruit smoothie with balanced ketchup notes.
Lori Primavera, vice president of marketing at Smoothie King, said it took months of development to get the recipe right. She described the final drink as a “savory-sweet blend that celebrates the tomato in all its glory.”
Quality Ingredients Matter
Both brands emphasize the quality of their ingredients. Heinz Simply Ketchup uses only seven ingredients and contains no high-fructose corn syrup or artificial preservatives. Smoothie King’s Clean Blends program bans over 70 additives, including artificial flavors, colors, and sweeteners.
The launch also aligns with the peak tomato harvest season, adding to the drink’s freshness and appeal. Whether you see it as a bold new treat or a curiosity worth trying, the Tomato Ketchup Smoothie is making its mark on the summer drink scene.
