Some baklava and sweets sold in London, Ontario, are under recall as part of a growing national salmonella outbreak. Officials urge people not to eat certain products that could carry serious health risks.

Products Recalled

The recall targets items from Jnaid Sweets, including “Classic Baklava,” “Turkish-style Baklava,” “Pistachio Fingers,” and “Crowns King.” These products were available at the shop in south London between May 15 and July 30. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed the recall as part of its ongoing investigation.

Source of Concern

Pistachios, a key ingredient in baklava, are believed to be the source of contamination. Health officials stress that pistachio products linked to salmonella should not be consumed, sold, or served.

Impact Across Provinces

Public health reports confirm 62 salmonella cases linked to pistachio-based products across four provinces: Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, and Manitoba. Quebec recorded 45 cases, making it the hardest hit. Ontario followed with 11 reported cases.

Health Risks and Symptoms

Health Canada warns that contaminated food may appear normal but can still cause illness. Those most at risk include young children, seniors, pregnant women, and people with weak immune systems. In severe cases, infections can become life-threatening.

Symptoms include fever, stomach cramps, vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. In some cases, salmonella may also lead to arthritis. While many people recover without medical treatment, some require hospitalization.

Previous Recalls and Ongoing Investigation

This is not the first recall connected to the outbreak. Earlier notices were issued on September 3 and September 5 for other pistachio products. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed that its investigation is still ongoing and more recalls may follow.

Advice for Consumers

Officials advise anyone who bought recalled items to avoid eating them and to discard them immediately. Those who feel unwell after eating pistachio-based products should seek medical attention.

National Food Safety Effort

The outbreak highlights the importance of food safety and strong monitoring systems. Authorities continue to track the spread of salmonella cases and update the public regularly. Canadians are urged to stay informed about recalls to protect themselves and their families.
