A fuel oil spill in Minden Hills has prompted a drinking water advisory for residents relying on South Lake, after contamination was detected over the weekend.
Officials confirmed that furnace oil leaked from a private property, leading to visible pollution on the lake’s surface. Authorities are now working to contain the spread while warning residents against using the water for daily needs.
Oil Spill Spreads Across Lake
The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks is currently on-site, coordinating containment efforts alongside the property owner. However, shifting wind conditions have made it difficult to fully control the spread of the oil.
An oil sheen has already been observed moving across the lake, raising concerns about the extent of contamination.
Drinking Water Advisory Issued
Lakelands Public Health has issued a precautionary advisory for residents and cottage owners who draw water directly from South Lake.
Authorities have made it clear that boiling the water will not make it safe for use, as oil contamination cannot be removed through heat.
Residents Urged to Avoid Lake Water
People in the affected area have been instructed not to use lake water for any household purposes. This includes drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, washing food, bathing, or cleaning dishes.
Residents are advised to switch to bottled water or other safe, unaffected sources until further notice.
Health and Safety Concerns
Fuel oil contamination can pose serious health risks if ingested or used for daily activities. Given that many homes in the area rely directly on lake water, the advisory is considered a critical preventive measure.
Officials stress that even minimal exposure could be harmful, particularly for vulnerable individuals.
Ongoing Monitoring and Response
Multiple agencies, including the Ministry, local authorities, and the Ontario Provincial Police, are actively monitoring the situation and responding to public concerns.
Efforts are focused on containing the spill, assessing environmental impact, and ensuring residents remain informed.
Advisory Remains in Effect
There is currently no timeline for when the advisory will be lifted. Authorities have stated that residents will be notified once testing confirms that the water is safe again.
Until then, the situation remains under close observation, with officials urging caution and strict adherence to safety guidelines.
