Anticipated iPhone 16 lineup upgrades include additional buttons and a revamped camera design. Launch expected in late 2024. (Apple)

March 11, 2024

Apple's highly anticipated iPhone 16 lineup is anticipated to introduce some notable changes, including additional buttons and an updated camera design. Among these anticipated additions is the inclusion of a Capture button specifically designed for video recording. Recently surfaced CAD sketches provide a glimpse into the design elements of the standard iPhone 16 model. These sketches reveal a shift from the current diagonal camera layout to a vertical slim configuration.

According to information shared by tipster Majin Bu on X (formerly known as Twitter), leaked CAD renders of the iPhone 16 suggest a slimmer camera module inspired by the design of the iPhone X. This new module features a vertical arrangement housing dual camera sensors, with the flash unit positioned outside the camera bump. This marks a departure from the diagonal camera setup seen in previous iPhone models.

The iPhone 16 is expected to replace the traditional Mute switch with an Action button, similar to the one introduced in the iPhone 15 Pro models. This versatile button can be utilized for various functions such as activating the flashlight, accessing the camera, or integrating with the Shortcuts app.

Furthermore, rumors suggest the inclusion of a Capture button on the left side of the iPhone 16, positioned below the power button. This button is speculated to offer video capturing functionality, possibly featuring pressure sensitivity for adjusting focus and zoom levels. With this new camera layout, Apple is anticipated to introduce Spatial Video recording capabilities to the base models, a feature currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro series.

The iPhone 16 series is expected to debut in the latter half of 2024, comprising five distinct models: iPhone 16 SE, iPhone 16 Plus SE, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are rumored to be powered by the A18 Bionic chip, manufactured using TSMC's 3nm process.
