On Thursday, Nov. 17, 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration shared this picture, spotlighting three recalled applesauce products - WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches, Schnucks-brand cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches and variety pack, and Weis-brand cinnamon applesauce pouches. The FDA is closely examining imported cinnamon from various countries due to concerns about toxic lead contamination. Reports of children falling ill after consuming applesauce pouches have prompted this investigation. The FDA identifies cinnamon from an Ecuadorian manufacturer as the probable culprit for elevated lead levels in the recalled applesauce puree pouches, associated with illnesses in at least 34 children across 22 states. In response to a concerning outbreak of acute lead poisoning in young children across 27 U.S. states, American health authorities have initiated an examination of a facility in Ecuador responsible for producing cinnamon applesauce pouches associated with the reported cases. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified contaminated cinnamon as the probable origin of the lead contamination, prompting an investigative team to gather samples from the Austrofoods plant.

This facility, located in Ecuador, had dispatched the now-recalled applesauce pouches, which were widely distributed through various retail outlets, including Dollar Tree and other stores throughout the United States. The FDA disclosed that Ecuadorian health officials detected elevated lead levels in the cinnamon supplied by Negasmart, the company providing cinnamon to Austrofoods. Consequently, Negasmart is currently facing sanctions as authorities in Ecuador diligently attempt to pinpoint the precise source of the tainted cinnamon, as announced by the FDA on Tuesday.

The FDA underscored that at least 64 children, all aged 6 or younger, from different states have reported illnesses potentially linked to the consumption of these specific applesauce products. These pouches, bearing the brand names WanaBana, Schnucks, and Weis, were not only available at Dollar Tree but were also accessible through major online platforms such as Amazon and other digital outlets. The recall of these products was initiated in late October after health officials in North Carolina initially raised concerns when young children exhibited elevated blood lead levels subsequent to consuming the pouches, which were subsequently found to contain exceedingly high lead concentrations.

The situation has prompted health authorities to take swift action to investigate the root cause of the lead contamination, focusing on the supply chain and production processes at the Austrofoods plant in Ecuador. The collaborative efforts between U.S. and Ecuadorian officials aim to determine the extent of the issue and prevent further distribution of potentially harmful products. The FDA's involvement underscores the significance of international cooperation in addressing food safety concerns that transcend national borders.

As the investigation unfolds, parents and consumers are advised to remain vigilant and heed the product recall notices to ensure the safety of young children. The FDA continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of transparent communication and collaboration between countries to safeguard public health and mitigate the risks associated with contaminated food products.
