Brock, 81, who authorities say fatally shot Hall who he thought was trying to rob him after scam phone calls deceived them both, was indicted on a murder charge, Monday, April 15, 2024, by a Clark County grand jury. Hall had no knowledge of the calls made to Brock, authorities said.

In South Charleston, Ohio, an 81-year-old man, William Brock, faces a murder charge for fatally shooting an Uber driver, Loletha Hall, under mistaken circumstances. Indicted on counts of murder, kidnapping, and felonious assault, Brock pleaded not guilty, potentially facing a life sentence if convicted.

The incident unfolded on March 25 at Brock's residence when he contacted the county sheriff's office, claiming self-defense against a robbery attempt. Brock had fallen victim to scam phone calls, purportedly from a local court officer, escalating into threats and demands for money. Hall, unaware of these calls, arrived at Brock's home, seemingly instructed to retrieve a package, likely orchestrated by the same scam caller.

Upon Hall's arrival, Brock brandished a firearm, interrogating her about the threatening calls and confiscating her phone, preventing her from leaving. As Hall attempted to flee, Brock shot her multiple times during a confrontation, resulting in her hospitalization and subsequent death from her injuries.

Initially charged with murder, Brock's actions were deemed excessive as Hall posed no imminent threat, prompting his indictment on additional charges. Investigations into the original scam calls targeting both Brock and Hall are ongoing, with authorities yet to ascertain if they originated from the same source. Brock awaits further legal proceedings, scheduled for Monday, as the community grapples with the tragic outcome of deceptive phone schemes leading to a fatal confrontation.
