My vegetarian brother stood by the stove, puzzled by a package of uncooked beef hot dogs. He was planning to cook them for us, his meat-eating family, while he enjoyed his Beyond Brats. "What do I do with these?" he asked, and I chuckled at his confusion.

But two days later, my meat-loving friend asked me the same question. It made me wonder: Does anyone actually know how to cook hot dogs?

Most processed hot dogs are precooked, so you won't cause food poisoning if you eat them cold from the fridge. However, reheating them can kill any lurking bacteria like listeria. But eating them cold isn’t ideal.

A perfect hot dog should be heated until it's plump inside and golden or even charred outside. Ask anyone the best way to cook a hot dog, and you're likely to spark a debate. People argue over grilling, pan-frying, microwaving, oven-roasting, or boiling. Food experts have tested all these methods, but there's no universal agreement.

Here's a simple guide to cooking hot dogs using various methods. Master these before your next cookout.

1. Pan-Frying (with a steam start)

Pan-frying gives a hot dog a plump interior and a crispy exterior. There's no oil needed.

  1. Add half an inch of water to a frying pan and let it simmer on medium-high heat.
  2. Add the hot dogs, a few at a time, and cover the pan with a lid for 2-3 minutes to let them steam. If the water evaporates too soon, add more.
  3. After steaming, remove the lid and let the water boil away. Roll the hot dogs around to brown them evenly.

2. Grilling

Grilling adds a smoky flavour and char marks.

  1. Preheat your grill, setting one side hotter than the other.
  2. Start cooking the hot dogs on the cooler side to prevent burning. Cook for one minute on each side.
  3. Move the hot dogs to the hotter side until they reach the desired colour.

3. Oven-Roasting

Oven-roasting is great for cooking large batches.

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Place hot dogs on a foil-lined cookie sheet for easy cleanup. Cook for 15 minutes, watching until they brown to your liking.

4. Microwaving

Leite’s Culinaria shares a trick for microwaving hot dogs: wrap them in a paper towel.

  1. Wrap the hot dog in a paper towel.
  2. Microwave for 30 seconds at 80% power. The paper towel traps steam, making the hot dog plump and juicy.

5. Boiling

Boiling is not recommended. According to Nathan’s Famous, boiling releases the hot dog's flavour into the water, leaving a bland taste. But if you must:

  1. Bring water to a rolling boil.
  2. Cook the hot dogs for 5-6 minutes.

Summary: Cooking hot dogs can be done in various ways, each with its benefits. Pan-frying with steam ensures a crispy exterior and plump interior. Grilling adds a smoky flavour and char marks. Oven roasting is perfect for large batches. Microwaving, when done with a paper towel, keeps them juicy. Boiling is least favoured as it can drain flavour.
