Smartphone innovation has significantly slowed in recent years. Gone are the days when each new phone generation brought excitement and long lines outside stores. However, this trend might change with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI). Smartphone makers are hopeful that AI will breathe new life into their devices.

For some time, manufacturers have integrated AI and machine learning into phones, enhancing features like photo quality and intelligent notifications. But generative AI brings new possibilities, including advanced photo-editing tools, content summarization, live translation, transcription, and smarter digital assistants.

Google was the first to introduce AI features in its Pixel 8 smartphones last year. Samsung followed with its Galaxy AI platform. This fall, Apple plans to join the AI trend with its new Apple Intelligence. To keep up, Samsung and Google are also preparing major product launches soon, promising more AI innovations.

Samsung will reveal its latest foldable phones, the Galaxy Flip and Galaxy Fold, at the Galaxy Unpacked event in Paris on July 10. Google will showcase its newest Pixel phones at the Made by Google keynote in Mountain View, California, on August 13.

A recent event in London highlighted Samsung's commitment to AI. To launch its Galaxy S24 with AI features, Samsung hosted a spectacular drone show depicting visuals of the solar system, signifying AI's limitless potential.

The main idea behind these AI enhancements is to offer new, exciting smartphone capabilities. However, this also means consumers may need to pay more for phones with these advanced features.

The competition among smartphone giants is fierce. While Google and Samsung initiated the AI smartphone race, Apple's recent moves have made generative AI more appealing and accessible to everyday users. During the June WWDC event, Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence, showcasing how it integrates with Photos, Messages, Mail, and Siri. For instance, users can ask Siri to find specific pictures by name and location, making the technology user-friendly and practical.
