Lionel Messi marked his return to action for Inter Miami after a hiatus since March 13, featuring in a 2-2 draw against the Colorado Rapids over the weekend. The Argentine wasted no time in making an impact, scoring an equalizer just 13 minutes after stepping onto the field, courtesy of a pass from Franco Negri. Another new addition to the team, Leo Alfonso, swiftly followed suit with his debut goal for Inter Miami, seemingly securing the lead, only for the Rapids to level the score in the 88th minute through Cole Bassett, resulting in a stalemate.

Looking ahead to their upcoming away fixture against Monterrey in the Concacaf Champions Cup on Wednesday, this match served as a mixed bag for Inter Miami, illustrating both reasons for optimism and concern. Despite a promising display, they faced setbacks, notably with Leonardo Campana exiting the field due to injury in the 42nd minute, adding to their existing injury woes. Benjamin Cremaschi, recuperating from hernia surgery during the offseason, returned to the bench but remained unused during the game, hinting at potential reinforcements for the squad.

Messi's return from a hamstring injury showcased his influence on the team, contributing with two chances created and five shots taken in just one half of play. However, Inter Miami's reliance on him highlights their dependence on his presence for offensive prowess. Yet, with several key players sidelined, including Federico Redondo, Robert Taylor, Serhiy Kryvtsov, and Campana, the team not only faces a lack of depth but also a deficit in defensive cover.

As they gear up for a crucial clash against Monterrey, securing a spot in the Club World Cup hangs in the balance for Inter Miami. The pressure is on for their star players to deliver, particularly after Messi potentially exerted more energy than anticipated during the recent match. Despite concerns over managing Messi's workload to avoid further injuries, his inclusion became imperative, underscoring the team's reliance on his talents.

Looking forward, Inter Miami aims to use Messi's return as a springboard for success in Mexico. However, questions loom over their defensive capabilities against a formidable Monterrey side. As they brace for one of the most significant matches in their history, the draw against the Rapids serves as a reminder of the challenges they face, emphasizing the need for a cohesive defensive effort to secure a positive result.
