The Hershey Company has announced it will bring back the original recipe for all Reese’s products starting in 2027. The decision follows public criticism over recent ingredient changes that affected some of its sweets.
The company confirmed that certain items, such as seasonal mini eggs, used a coating with less chocolate instead of the traditional recipe.
Return to Original Ingredients
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups have long used real milk or dark chocolate along with peanut butter. However, rising costs and changing production choices led to some products using alternative coatings.
Hershey now plans to restore these items to their classic versions. The company says customers can expect the return of the familiar taste that made the brand popular.
Family Member Speaks Out
The issue gained attention after Brad Reese, grandson of the brand’s founder, raised concerns in a public letter. He questioned the company’s decision to move away from its original ingredients.
In his message, he wrote, “How does The Hershey Co. continue to position Reese's as its flagship brand, a symbol of trust, quality and leadership, while quietly replacing the very ingredients (Milk Chocolate + Peanut Butter) that built Reese's trust in the first place?”
His comments sparked discussion among fans and brought renewed focus to the company’s product changes.
Company Explains Its Approach
Hershey acknowledged that it had made some adjustments to recipes in recent years. The company said it aimed to respond to changing tastes and market conditions.
In a statement, it said, “Hershey is committed to making products consumers love and that means continually reviewing our recipes to meet evolving tastes and preferences.”
Rising cocoa prices have also played a role in these changes, as manufacturers across the industry look for ways to manage costs.
More Changes Ahead
Alongside the return to classic Reese’s recipes, Hershey plans additional updates across its product range. The company will begin using natural colours in its sweets and will adjust the recipe for Kit Kat bars to make them creamier.
It also plans to increase its research and development spending by 25 per cent next year. This move aims to support new ideas while improving existing products.
A Brand with Deep Roots
Reese’s has a long history that dates back to 1928, when H.B. Reese created the famous peanut butter cups. His company later became part of Hershey in 1963.
The brand remains one of the company’s most recognized products, with a strong following among chocolate lovers.
Looking Ahead
By returning to its original recipe, Hershey hopes to rebuild trust with customers and stay true to the brand’s roots. The change reflects a balance between innovation and tradition, as the company moves forward while listening to feedback.
