Yusuf Dikeç becomes the new internet sensation at the 'Glasses Olympics'. Yahoo

Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikeç made headlines at the 2024 Paris Olympics by securing a silver medal in the air pistol team event, all while opting for minimal equipment. At 51 years old, Dikeç competed with just a pair of yellow earplugs and ordinary glasses, setting him apart from other competitors who typically use specialized gear like large ear protectors and visors.
Dikeç's performance was particularly remarkable because he shot with one hand tucked into his pocket, defying the usual high-tech setup seen in competitive shooting. His partner, Şevval İlayda Tarhan, also chose a minimalist approach by forgoing blinders and keeping her hand in her pocket. This unconventional approach contributed to Turkey's first-ever medal in an Olympic shooting event.

The victory was a standout moment, with Serbia's Damir Mikec and Zorana Arunović taking gold, and India's Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh winning bronze. Despite the intense competition, Dikeç's laid-back style and casual attire became a talking point around the world.

Dikeç’s unique approach caught the public’s eye, turning him into an internet sensation. Fans praised his nonchalant style with comments highlighting his simple yet effective shooting technique. "No lens, no headphones, just vibes," Eurosport tweeted, celebrating his unconventional methods. Social media users also shared their admiration, noting his impressive performance with minimal gear.

In contrast to Dikeç’s minimalist approach, South Korea’s Kim Ye-ji garnered attention for her futuristic gear during the 10-meter air pistol women's event. Sporting high-tech lenses and a "Paris 2024" blinder, Kim was dubbed the "James Bond of the Olympics" by enthusiastic fans. Her advanced equipment contrasted sharply with Dikeç’s casual style, further highlighting the diversity in Olympic shooting practices.

The success of both Dikeç and Kim underscores the varied strategies and styles in the sport, showing that while technology and specialized gear can be advantageous, raw talent and personal style also play crucial roles. Dikeç’s achievement not only brought pride to Turkey but also demonstrated that success in sports can come from unexpected approaches.

As the Olympics continue, Dikeç’s story serves as a reminder of the excitement and unpredictability of sports. His silver medal win, achieved with simplicity and skill, has captured the imagination of fans worldwide and added a memorable chapter to the 2024 Games.
