After 12 long years of restoration, Italy’s beloved Path of Love, or Via dell’Amore, has officially reopened. Nestled in the Cinque Terre region, this renowned trail is celebrated for its breathtaking views and romantic charm.
The Path of Love first welcomed locals back on July 27, and it will be open to the general public starting August 9. This picturesque path, a highlight of the Cinque Terre’s stunning landscapes, has undergone significant upgrades during its renovation. The trail is now beautifully illuminated and equipped with handrails, making it more accessible and safe for visitors.
Originally conceived over a century ago as a railroad tunnel, the path's romantic reputation emerged only after World War II. For many years, it was a popular spot for couples to stroll and enjoy the scenic beauty of the Italian coast. However, the trail faced closures due to frequent landslides, including a serious incident 12 years ago when four tourists were injured. This led to an extensive restoration project aimed at preserving and enhancing this iconic trail.
Fabrizia Pecunia, the Mayor of Riomaggiore and Manarola, expressed excitement about the reopening, stating, “The reopening has been eagerly awaited by everyone here.” This sentiment reflects the enthusiasm and anticipation felt by both locals and visitors who have been longing to return to this enchanting path.
The Cinque Terre region, known for its stunning coastal scenery and colourful villages, continues to attract tourists from around the world. The restored Path of Love adds to the area’s allure, promising visitors an unforgettable experience amidst its natural beauty.
