Canada’s Marco Arop secured a silver medal in the men’s 800 meters at the Olympics in a thrilling race at Stade de France on Saturday. The 25-year-old from Edmonton narrowly missed out on gold by just a hundredth of a second, finishing with a record-breaking Canadian time of 1:41.20.
Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi clinched the gold with a time of 1:41.19, barely edging out Arop in a nail-biting photo finish. Reflecting on the intense race, Arop acknowledged the competitive challenge Wanyonyi posed, particularly in the final stretch. "It’s not the first time we’ve had such a close finish. I knew Wanyonyi would be strong in the last 10 meters, and I was just trying to keep up," Arop shared.

Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati, who had an undefeated season leading up to the Olympics, finished in third place, taking the bronze with a time of 1:41.50.

Arop came into the Olympics with high expectations, being the reigning world champion in the 800 meters and having earned a bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships. His Olympic performance solidified his place among Canada’s track legends, as he became the second Canadian ever to medal in the men’s 800 meters at a World Championship, joining Gary Reed, who won silver in 2007.

Despite narrowly missing the gold, Arop expressed satisfaction with his performance. "It was an incredible night. We’ve been preparing for this moment all year, and I couldn’t be happier with how I raced. Setting a personal best and winning silver is something I’m really proud of," he said.

Arop’s silver medal marks Canada’s first in the men’s 800 meters at the Olympics since Bill Crothers took home the silver at the 1964 Tokyo Games. This achievement also adds to Canada’s history in the event, bringing the total number of Olympic medals to five. The legacy includes Alex Wilson’s silver and Phil Edwards’ bronze at the 1932 Los Angeles Games, as well as Edwards’ additional bronze at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Marco Arop’s remarkable journey in track and field continues to inspire Canadians, as he adds another chapter to the nation's rich Olympic history. His silver medal is a testament to his perseverance, skill, and dedication to his sport, making him one of the standout athletes of these Games.
