Botafogo claimed its maiden Copa Libertadores title in a thrilling 3-1 victory over fellow Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro at Monumental de Núñez Stadium on Saturday. The team showcased resilience, overcoming an early red card and securing their place in South American football history.
The drama began just 30 seconds into the match when Botafogo midfielder Gregore was sent off for a dangerous foul on Fausto Vera, leaving the team to battle with ten players for nearly the entire game. Despite the setback, Botafogo regrouped and struck first in the 35th minute. Winger Luiz Henrique found the net from close range after capitalizing on a deflected shot from Marlon Freitas.

Henrique played a pivotal role again just before halftime when he drew a foul in the penalty area. Following a VAR review, Alex Telles stepped up and coolly converted the spot-kick, doubling Botafogo's lead.

Atlético Mineiro responded quickly in the second half, with substitute Eduardo Vargas heading home a goal just seconds after the break. The veteran forward Hulk set up the strike with a perfectly delivered corner kick. Mineiro pressed hard for an equalizer, creating multiple chances through Deyverson and Hulk, but failed to capitalize.

Botafogo sealed the victory in injury time when Junior Santos, the tournament’s top scorer with ten goals, struck the decisive third goal. Santos had missed earlier matches due to injury but returned to deliver a historic moment for the club.

A Historic Feat for Botafogo

The win marked the sixth consecutive Copa Libertadores title for a Brazilian team and the 24th overall for the nation, just one shy of Argentina's record. Botafogo’s triumph also continued Rio de Janeiro’s dominance, following Fluminense’s victory in 2023 and Flamengo’s in 2022.

Coach Arthur Jorge became the latest European manager to guide a team to the Copa Libertadores title, joining the ranks of Jorge Jesus and Abel Ferreira. For Atlético Mineiro’s coach Gabriel Milito, the defeat dashed his hopes of becoming the first Argentine manager to win the tournament with a Brazilian side.

Botafogo fans erupted in celebration as Luis Henrique scored a crucial goal during a match in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, November 30, 2024. The moment, captured by photographer Bruna Prado, highlighted the passion of the home crowd.

The victory also provided redemption for Botafogo's American owner, John Textor. Under his stewardship, the club has seen significant investment and a resurgence after relegating in 2020. Textor’s ownership has not been without controversy, including accusations of match-fixing last year, but the Copa Libertadores triumph stands as his crowning achievement.

Atlético Mineiro, owned by Brazilian billionaire Rubens Menin, also boasts considerable financial backing but fell short on the night.

Botafogo now turns its attention to domestic glory. They are poised to clinch their first Brazilian league title since 1995.
