Canada continues to assert its dominance in women’s ski cross, with Marielle Thompson, India Sherret, and Hannah Schmidt claiming all three spots on the podium during Tuesday's World Cup race in Arosa, Switzerland. Thompson, from Whistler, B.C., secured her 33rd career win and 70th overall medal, pulling away from the competition in a flawless performance.
"It's incredible to share this victory with my teammates," Thompson shared, celebrating the rare Canadian sweep.
The 32-year-old Olympic champion is no stranger to success. Earlier this year, Thompson clinched gold in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, leading a Canadian trio to the podium, with Brittany Phelan taking silver and Sherret earning bronze. Thompson’s stellar performance has also earned her six wins this season, including a dramatic victory in the finale at Idre Fjäll, Sweden, where she outpaced France’s Marielle Berger.
India Sherret, who hails from Cranbrook, B.C., added another silver to her achievements this season after an outstanding win last week in the women’s big final in Val Thorens, France. Meanwhile, Ottawa’s Hannah Schmidt secured third place in Arosa by holding off France’s Berger, marking a triumphant continuation of her recent strong form.
The Canadian women's team has consistently outperformed its rivals this season, setting a high standard of excellence. In last week's opening race in Val Thorens, Thompson bested local favourite Fanny Smith of Switzerland to take gold, with Sherret and Schmidt also delivering standout performances.
Notably, Edmonton’s Abby McEwen earned second place in the women’s small final on Tuesday, adding depth to Canada’s dominance. The race also saw challenges for Switzerland's Talina Gantenbein, who claimed victory in the women’s small final, while Fanny Smith could not finish after withdrawing mid-race.
On the men’s side, Reece Howden of Cultus Lake, B.C., took the spotlight with a nail-biting win in the big final against Italy’s reigning world champion, Simone Deromedis. Sweden’s David Mobaerg placed third, just ahead of Canada’s Jared Schmidt, making it another impressive day for the Canadian ski cross team.
