Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (26) celebrated with his teammates after scoring a touchdown during the second half of their game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, January 5, 2025, in Detroit. The moment was captured in an NFL matchup by photographer Charlie Riedel.

The Detroit Lions claimed a commanding 31-9 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night, securing their second consecutive NFC North title and the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. The win also grants Detroit a coveted first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
Gibbs Shines Bright

Rookie sensation Jahmyr Gibbs stole the show, scoring four touchdowns, three of them in the second half. His explosive performance, including 139 rushing yards on 23 carries and 31 receiving yards, lifted the Lions during a game where quarterback Jared Goff had an inconsistent outing.

“He was special, and we needed him to be,” Goff said after the game.

Despite throwing two interceptions, Goff made critical plays when it mattered most, completing 27 of 33 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown.

Vikings Fall Short

Minnesota’s quarterback, Sam Darnold, struggled against Detroit's defence, completing only 44% of his passes. The Vikings missed crucial opportunities in the red zone, failing to score touchdowns on all four trips inside Detroit's 20-yard line.

“Kicking field goals isn’t going to get it done against that team,” Darnold admitted.

Minnesota’s standout receiver, Justin Jefferson, was held to just 54 yards on three catches, a far cry from his usual impact.

A Historic Night

The game was a rare clash of teams with a combined 28 regular-season wins, making it one of the most anticipated finales in recent NFL history. For Detroit, this victory marks their first No. 1 seed and fuels hopes of ending their championship drought, which dates back to 1957.

“This isn’t the end goal,” said Goff. “We’ve got more to achieve.”

Injuries

Both teams faced injuries during the game. The Lions saw defensive back Terrion Arnold and defensive lineman Pat O’Connor leave with foot and calf injuries, respectively. Minnesota’s linebacker Patrick Jones was inactive due to a knee issue.

What’s Next?

The Lions will enjoy a much-needed bye week before hosting a divisional-round game. Meanwhile, the Vikings head to Los Angeles to face the NFC West champion Rams on wild-card weekend. A potential rematch between these division rivals looms if Minnesota advances.
