Japan welcomed the Harry Potter Studio Tour in the summer of 2023, offering fans an immersive behind-the-scenes experience of the beloved film series. CNN

February 13, 2025

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced plans to bring a Harry Potter Studio Tour to Shanghai. The entertainment company is teaming up with Jinjiang International, which confirmed the news on its WeChat account. This new attraction will be the first of its kind in China and is set to open in 2027.

The studio tour will be built within the existing Jinjiang Action Park, a well-known amusement park in southwest Shanghai. Covering about 53,000 square meters, the attraction will feature a soundstage and a backlot, offering visitors a deep dive into the magical world of Harry Potter. According to Jinjiang, the experience will give fans a chance to explore the making of the beloved films, similar to the popular Harry Potter Studio Tours in London and Tokyo.

While specific details about the Shanghai tour have yet to be revealed, it is expected to include some of the most famous sets from the films. Fans may get to walk through Diagon Alley, Platform Nine and Three Quarters, Privet Drive, the Hogwarts Express, and the Ministry of Magic. There will also be themed food and drinks, such as butterbeer, chocolate frogs, and Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans.

Right now, fans can visit Harry Potter Studio Tours in both London and Tokyo. CNN

Warner Bros. Discovery described the upcoming tour as a half-day experience, making it a major attraction for both tourists and local fans. The park’s central location—just 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Hongqiao International Airport—adds to its accessibility.

Jinjiang Action Park is currently closed for renovations and is expected to reopen in 2027, with the Harry Potter Studio Tour as its main attraction. The park, which has long been a favorite among Shanghai locals, previously featured rides and themes based on Chinese folklore and characters. The addition of a Harry Potter experience marks a major shift, reflecting the franchise’s popularity in China.

The Harry Potter series has a massive fanbase in China, with themed cafes, bars, and restaurants popping up in major cities. Universal Studios in Beijing already has a Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and the books and movies remain widely popular across different age groups. The films were among the few foreign movies that faced little censorship in China, further cementing their cultural impact.

This announcement comes at a time when China is actively promoting domestic tourism and economic growth. By bringing an internationally recognized attraction like the Harry Potter Studio Tour to Shanghai, officials hope to boost local spending and attract visitors. With the park’s reopening planned for 2027, fans across the country can start counting down the days until they step into the magic of Harry Potter’s world.
