Ruben Amorim didn’t hold back after Wayne Rooney called him "naive" for declaring his goal at Manchester United is to win the Premier League. The United manager dismissed the criticism, pointing out how easy it is to comment from the comfort of a TV studio.
Amorim’s statement came after his team’s FA Cup exit against Fulham on Sunday. Speaking after the game, he reiterated his belief that United’s ultimate goal is to reclaim the league title.
Rooney, analyzing the match as a pundit for the BBC, said Amorim’s claim was unrealistic. In response, the United boss countered with a sharp remark, highlighting that offering opinions from a distance is far easier than managing a team on the pitch.
"Winning the Premier League is our goal," Amorim emphasized. "But being naive would be thinking we can do it immediately or dominate next season. Everyone has opinions, and I respect that. But I was a pundit myself after retiring, and I know how simple it is to sit and talk."
Despite the club’s current struggles, Amorim remains committed to the long-term vision. "Our goal, as a club and board, is to restore United to its past glories," he said. "It might not happen under me, but that’s the direction we are moving in. And I’m not naive—that’s why I’m here, leading this club at 40."
United’s FA Cup Hopes Crushed in Penalty Shootout
Manchester United’s FA Cup run ended in heartbreak as they lost to Fulham in a tense penalty shootout. The game, played at Old Trafford, finished 1-1 in regular time.
Fulham took the lead just before halftime through Calvin Bassey, but United hit back in the second half when Bruno Fernandes found the net. Both goalkeepers, André Onana and Bernd Leno, were crucial in keeping the game level, pushing the match into penalties.
In the decisive shootout, Fulham’s Leno emerged as the hero. He saved shots from Victor Lindelöf and Joshua Zirkzee, securing Fulham’s place in the next round and leaving United empty-handed.
With the FA Cup dream over, United’s focus now shifts to the Europa League. Amorim’s men face Real Sociedad in Spain on Thursday, with the competition now representing their best hope for silverware this season.
"We started well, controlled possession, and created chances," Amorim reflected. "But we couldn’t maintain the intensity throughout. Penalties are unpredictable, and today wasn’t our day."
