The Anaheim Ducks showcased their promising future in a commanding 6-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday. With young talents stepping up, Mason McTavish led the charge with two goals, while Jackson LaCombe and Cutter Gauthier each contributed three assists. The Ducks, now 27-26-7, are in pursuit of the Calgary Flames for the final wild-card playoff spot in the Western Conference, trailing by six points.
For Anaheim, this win was crucial, especially after a disappointing 6-3 loss to Chicago. McTavish emphasized how facing a strong team like the Oilers pushes them to compete harder. "They have more talent, so we need to bring our best," he said. "We stuck to our system, and it worked. We have something special here, and we hope to keep it rolling against Vancouver."
McTavish, just 22 years old, has been in excellent form, tallying 13 points over his last 13 games. He credits his recent success to staying aggressive and capitalizing on opportunities. Ducks head coach Greg Cronin praised his progress, noting that while McTavish had a slow start, his dedication is now paying off. "People expect him to score because he has an incredible shot," Cronin said. "But it’s more about playing the right way. When you do that, the goals follow." McTavish now sits at 16 goals for the season, just three shy of his career best.
LaCombe has also been a standout, extending his point streak to six games with three more assists against the Oilers. The 24-year-old defenceman has racked up 33 points in 53 games this season. Reflecting on the win, he noted the team’s resilience. "We weren’t happy with our last game, but we bounced back strong," he said. "We’re in the playoff hunt and every game matters. Our chemistry is improving, and it’s showing on the ice."
His plus-five rating in the game was a career first. "That’s never happened before," he laughed. "But when your teammates are making plays, good things happen."
Other young Ducks also made an impact. Gauthier, 21, assisted on three goals, while Leo Carlsson, 20, and Sam Colangelo, 23, each recorded a goal and an assist. Veteran players Ryan Strome and Alex Killorn also found the back of the net, adding to the team's dominant performance.
Anaheim's emerging stars are proving they can hold their own against top teams. With momentum on their side, the Ducks are eyeing a strong push for the playoffs.
