Pope Francis sent his first audio message from the hospital on Thursday, thanking people for their prayers and support. He has been receiving treatment for double pneumonia for nearly three weeks. The message was played during a prayer service in St. Peter’s Square.

“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers in the Square for my health,” Pope Francis said in Spanish, pausing between words to catch his breath. “May God bless you.”

The Vatican said the pope remained stable on Thursday, with no new breathing issues. His doctors have decided not to release another medical update until Saturday due to his stable condition.

Francis was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14 with a serious lung infection. His treatment has been adjusted as needed, but recent updates have been more positive. The Vatican confirmed that he has had no fever and that his blood tests have remained steady. While his doctors say his condition is still serious, they are optimistic about his recovery.

Earlier this week, the pope experienced two episodes of breathing difficulties that required a non-invasive ventilator. Now, he only uses the device at night and receives oxygen therapy during the day.

Despite his illness, the pope continues to work. The Vatican reported that he has been reviewing documents and approving official decisions. On Thursday, he authorized the appointment of two bishops.

Francis has also been receiving physical therapy to help with mobility. Due to knee and back pain, he has been using a wheelchair in recent years.

The pope has not been seen in public since entering the hospital, marking his longest absence since he became pope 12 years ago. It is unclear when he will be discharged.

Francis has faced multiple health issues in recent years. As a young man, he suffered from pleurisy, which led to the removal of part of his lung. Because of this, he is more vulnerable to respiratory infections like double pneumonia, a condition that inflames both lungs and makes breathing difficult.
