The Washington Capitals have ensured a strong future for their defence by signing Jakob Chychrun to an eight-year contract extension worth $9 million per season. The announcement came on Tuesday, locking in the 26-year-old defenseman ahead of his impending free agency.

Chychrun has been a key player for the Capitals this season, recording 43 points in 65 games, including 18 goals and 25 assists. His goal tally ranks third among all NHL defensemen, trailing only Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche and Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Within the team, he is just three points behind John Carlson, the Capitals' top-scoring defenseman.

This is Chychrun’s first season in Washington after being acquired in an offseason trade from the Ottawa Senators. In exchange, the Capitals gave up defenseman Nick Jensen and a third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Originally selected 16th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2016 NHL Draft, Chychrun has built an impressive career with 532 games played across three teams: the Coyotes, Senators, and Capitals. Over this span, he has tallied 94 goals and 165 assists, totalling 259 points. His 43 points this season mark a personal best, surpassing his previous high of 41 points, which he achieved twice—once with the Coyotes in the 2020-21 season and again last year with the Senators. Despite his regular-season success, his postseason experience is limited, with only one point in nine playoff games.

For the Capitals, Chychrun’s signing is a significant move as they continue their dominant season. Sitting atop the NHL standings with a 47-15-8 record and 102 points, Washington is currently on a four-game winning streak. They aim to extend their streak to five when they face the Western Conference-leading Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.

Washington has been a consistent playoff contender, qualifying in nine of the last 10 seasons. However, the team has struggled in the postseason, failing to advance past the first round since capturing their first-ever Stanley Cup in 2018 against the Vegas Golden Knights. With Chychrun now committed long-term, the Capitals hope he can play a key role in their championship ambitions.
