In 1993, a reluctant American teen, Kerri Cunningham, was dragged by her parents on a European vacation that she initially dreaded. At 14 years old, the idea of leaving her friends and hometown in the Hamptons for a long trip across the ocean felt like a punishment. However, little did she know that this trip would turn out to be life-changing, creating a bond that would endure for decades.
Kerri’s family started their journey in the U.K., continued through France, and then took part in a two-week tour of Italy. Despite her teenage grumbling, Kerri was about to meet someone who would alter her life in ways she couldn’t have imagined.

The turning point came when Kerri met Dirk Stevens, a 15-year-old boy travelling with his family. Both were reluctant participants in family vacations, but a chance meeting on a ferry ride across the English Channel sparked an immediate connection. Dirk, with his charming smile and laid-back attitude, quickly caught Kerri’s attention. "I was immediately smitten," Kerri recalls, remembering how Dirk reminded her of Hugh Grant with his floppy hair and warm demeanour.
The two teens soon found themselves inseparable during their travels through Italy. They would sit side by side on the bus, share music from Kerri’s Walkman, and sneak away to have moments alone. Their families grew close, bonding over shared interests, and Kerri began to admire Dirk’s strong, caring nature. Dirk helped his father, who used a wheelchair, navigate the cobbled streets of Italy, a gesture that left a deep impression on Kerri.
Their budding romance blossomed with stolen kisses and moments of joy, including a gondola ride in Venice filled with laughter. However, when the two-week tour ended, saying goodbye was heartbreaking. They promised to keep in touch and reunite the following summer, planning Dirk’s visit to New York in 1994.

Throughout the year, their connection grew stronger through letters, phone calls, and emails, despite the challenges of distance. When Dirk arrived in Long Island the next summer, their love for each other deepened. They spent their days together at the beach and long evenings enjoying each other’s company. Yet, despite their undeniable bond, the reality of living in separate countries made their relationship difficult to maintain, and they both knew it couldn’t continue long-term.
As time passed, their communication slowed. Life moved on, and both Kerri and Dirk focused on their studies, dating other people, and dealing with personal losses, including Kerri’s father’s death from ALS. However, their connection never fully faded. In 2001, Kerri was offered a chance to reunite with Dirk in Paris, and they both eagerly accepted.
Their reunion was everything they had dreamed of. In Paris, surrounded by romance, they visited iconic landmarks, shared intimate moments, and rekindled the spark that had never fully died. But as magical as it was, Kerri and Dirk knew that the realities of adulthood and distance were stronger than their feelings. Their time together in Paris was bittersweet, marking the end of their teenage love and the beginning of new chapters in their lives.
Though they parted ways once again, they promised to stay in touch and let fate guide their paths. Kerri and Dirk’s story is a testament to the enduring power of first love and the way it can shape our lives, no matter how far apart we are.
