Egypt, a country famed for its awe-inspiring pyramids, is taking steps to enhance the visitor experience at one of the world’s most iconic landmarks. The Pyramids of Giza, which draw millions of tourists each year, are about to undergo a major transformation aimed at tackling long-standing issues that have plagued the site for years.

A Troubled Past for the Pyramids

Despite their historical significance, the Pyramids of Giza have been far from perfect for tourists. Overcrowding, aggressive street vendors, and reports of animal mistreatment have tarnished the experience for many visitors. The once-pristine site, a UNESCO World Heritage treasure, has faced criticism for poor management, leaving many travelers frustrated and disappointed.

A Fresh Start: $51 Million Revamp

To address these problems, Egypt is investing $51 million in a bold plan to revamp the pyramids. The project, spearheaded by Orascom Pyramids Entertainment Services, aims to restore tombs, improve visitor facilities, and tackle the challenges that have hindered the site for years.

Making the Visit More Enjoyable

As part of the plan, 45 electric buses will be introduced to shuttle visitors around the site. These buses will run every five minutes, helping to reduce overcrowding and making it easier for people to explore the area without the stress of long lines or crowded pathways. A new online ticketing system will also streamline the entry process, and an upgraded visitor center will provide a more modern and welcoming space for tourists.

Business mogul Naguib Sawiris, who is behind much of the funding, took to social media to make a strong statement. He stressed that vendors who refuse to move to designated areas within the revamped site would be banned. “The well-being of the public and the preservation of this treasure is far more important than catering to the interests of a few individuals who have caused harm to the country for years,” he wrote.

Tackling Animal Cruelty: A Major Concern

One of the most disturbing issues surrounding the Pyramids of Giza has been the mistreatment of animals, particularly the horses and camels used for rides. Reports from PETA have exposed horrific cases of abuse, including routine beating, starvation, and neglect. Some animals were even left to die after being overworked.
Jason Baker, Vice President of PETA Asia, described the situation as a disgrace. “Animals are literally ridden to death and then dumped like rubbish outside the gate,” he said. PETA is calling on the Egyptian government to take immediate action to remove these animals from the site and ensure their
well-being.

Looking Ahead: A Brighter Future for the Pyramids

With these sweeping changes, Egypt is hopeful that the Pyramids of Giza can once again become the majestic and awe-inspiring destination they were always meant to be. The revamp is not just about improving the tourist experience; it's about preserving Egypt’s rich history and ensuring that future generations can experience the beauty of these ancient wonders in a respectful and ethical environment.
By addressing these long-standing issues head-on, Egypt is making a clear statement: the Pyramids of Giza deserve better, and so do the people who come to see them
