Kevin De Bruyne received a heartfelt farewell at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night. It was an evening filled with emotion, gratitude, and a few tears as Manchester City honoured one of their greatest-ever players. Pep Guardiola, often stoic on the sidelines, couldn’t hold back his tears, calling it “a sad day.”

A Legend Departs: De Bruyne's Final Etihad Appearance

At 33, De Bruyne has cemented his legacy as a Manchester City icon. On Tuesday, he played his last home match in a 3-1 win over Bournemouth.

Though the night was about celebration, it wasn’t a fairytale ending on the pitch. The Belgian midfielder missed a golden chance to score in the first half. Later, following Mateo Kovacic’s red card, he was substituted – a quiet ending to a loud legacy.

Despite that, the occasion remained memorable. Fans filled the stadium with applause. Banners waved, chants echoed, and tears flowed. The club announced a statue will be erected outside the stadium to honour De Bruyne’s decade of service. The gesture visibly moved him.

An Emotional Speech from the Midfield Maestro

After the final whistle, De Bruyne addressed the crowd. His voice trembled with emotion as he thanked the City faithful.

“I always tried to play with creativity and passion,” he said. “I wanted to enjoy football and I hope you all enjoyed it too.”

He expressed deep gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and fans. “Everyone inside and outside the club pushed me to be the best version of myself,” he added. “These guys on the pitch made me better. I've made friends for life here.”

A Glorious Decade at Manchester City

De Bruyne leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. In ten seasons, he collected 16 winners’ medals, including multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and League Cups. His vision, passing, and leadership helped define City’s dominance under Guardiola.

Off the pitch, he became a beloved figure in Manchester. From his shy early days to becoming club captain, De Bruyne grew into a symbol of dedication and excellence.

Pep Guardiola: “He Will Be Missed”

Manager Pep Guardiola reflected on the special bond between De Bruyne and the City family.

“Everyone can see how much the fans love him,” Guardiola said. “The trophies are important, yes. But leaving with this kind of respect? That’s priceless.”

He added, “I don’t know who he supported when he arrived, but I’m sure Kevin is a City fan now – and always will be. That’s because of the connection he built with everyone here.”

Statue to Immortalise a City Legend

To mark his contribution, Manchester City announced plans to build a statue of De Bruyne outside the Etihad. It will stand alongside those of Vincent Kompany and David Silva – a fitting tribute to one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders.

The statue ensures De Bruyne’s legacy will live on long after his departure. Generations of fans will see his image and remember the magic he brought to the pitch.

A Farewell, But Never Goodbye

Though his time at City has come to an end, De Bruyne's connection with the club and its fans remains unbreakable. As he waved goodbye to the home crowd, it was clear – Kevin De Bruyne is more than a footballer. He’s family.

From missed chances to unforgettable goals, from trophies to tributes – his journey in sky blue has been nothing short of iconic. And as the curtain falls, Manchester rises to salute one of its greatest heroes.
