Connor McDavid once again proved why he's the heart of the Edmonton Oilers. With a 6-1 victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final, McDavid delivered a performance that reminded everyone exactly who he is — the best in the game.
McDavid Silences Doubters with Two-Goal Performance
Despite some buzz about his recent goal drought — just one goal in 10 games — McDavid responded emphatically. He scored twice and now has five goals and 17 assists in this year’s postseason. Any doubts about his scoring ability quickly vanished as he showcased his trademark speed, precision, and composure.
A Familiar Nightmare for Dallas
For the Stars, facing McDavid in the playoffs is becoming a nightmare they can’t wake from. He now has 15 points in his last nine Conference Final games against Dallas. One year after eliminating the Stars, McDavid is once again carving through their defense with ease.
Head coach Pete DeBoer summed it up best: “That third goal was kind of a backbreaker.” That goal — Connor McDavid’s second of the night — came with only 19 seconds left in the second period, crushing Dallas’s momentum.
Setting the Tone Early
Connor didn’t wait long to make his presence felt. His first goal came at 14:38 of the opening period, giving the Oilers a 2-0 lead. It would stand as the game-winner. Timing is everything in playoff hockey, and McDavid once again showed his knack for clutch performances.
Teammates in Awe
Oilers forward Zach Hyman had nothing but praise for his captain.
"He’s a 60-goal scorer. People forget that,” Hyman said. “When he shoots, there’s a good chance it goes in.”
That was true again in Game 3. Connor, who had been converting at just 5.9% in the playoffs, finally saw the puck start to drop again. His regular season average? A far more dangerous 13.3%.
Game 6 Flashback: A Moment Only McDavid Could Create
Dallas fans still haven’t forgotten the magic Connor pulled off in last year’s Game 6. With the Oilers up 3-2 in the series, he created one of the most unforgettable goals in recent playoff memory.
With Chris Tanev in the box, Connor danced around Stars defenders, toe-dragged past Miro Heiskanen, and backhanded the puck behind Jake Oettinger. The goal set the tone for the night. Edmonton won 2-1, clinched the series, and booked a ticket to their first Stanley Cup Final since 2006.
Edmonton’s Depth Gives McDavid Breathing Room
This year, the Oilers aren’t solely leaning on Connor McDavid’s brilliance. The team has more balance, more depth, and more ways to win. Still, McDavid leads all scorers in the 2024 playoffs with 22 points.
"You have to win games different ways,” McDavid said.
"Dominant nights, big saves, special teams — we’re finding ways.”
They sure did on Sunday. Edmonton now leads the series 2-1 and looks poised for another deep run — with McDavid steering the ship.
McDavid: The Unstoppable X-Factor
Whether it’s a key pass, a stunning goal, or a momentum-shifting moment, Connor McDavid always finds a way to be the difference. For the Dallas Stars, he remains their biggest problem — and Edmonton’s greatest weapon.
The series isn't over yet, but one thing is clear: when McDavid is on the ice, anything is possible.
