The Edmonton Oilers suffered a major setback during Game 4 of the Western Conference Final on Tuesday night. Forward Zach Hyman left the ice in the first period with an upper-body injury and did not return. His sudden exit raised concern among fans and teammates alike.

Hyman Leaves After First-Period Hit

The incident happened early in the game. Hyman took a glancing hit from Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment. Immediately afterward, he dropped his stick and favored his right arm as he skated off the ice. He went straight down the tunnel and didn’t return to the bench for the second period.

Hyman’s physical presence and high-impact play have been critical to the Oilers’ playoff push. Losing him during such a pivotal game adds uncertainty as the team nears a possible Stanley Cup Final appearance.

A Key Piece of the Oilers Offense

Zach Hyman isn't just another name on the roster — he’s a cornerstone of Edmonton’s top line. Skating alongside Connor McDavid, Hyman has consistently delivered results both in the regular season and the playoffs.

He scored 54 goals last season and added 16 more in the playoffs during the Oilers’ deep run. This year, he tallied 27 goals and 17 assists for a total of 44 points across 73 regular-season games. That consistency has made him one of Edmonton’s most reliable forwards.

League-Leading Playoff Performance

Before Game 4, Hyman led the NHL postseason in hits with 109. That’s 27 more than the next closest player, Sam Bennett of the Florida Panthers. He also recorded five goals and six assists in the 2024-25 playoffs up to that point.

His aggressive forechecking, physicality, and scoring ability have been key for the Oilers. That combination is difficult to replace, especially at this crucial stage of the playoffs.

More Injury Woes for the Oilers

Hyman wasn’t the only missing piece for Edmonton in Game 4. Winger Connor Brown was also out after taking a hard hit in Game 3. These back-to-back injuries have tested the team’s depth and forced lineup adjustments.

Additionally, defenseman Mattias Ekholm, who hasn’t played at all in the postseason due to a lower-body injury, remains sidelined. He’s reportedly nearing a return, but wasn’t dressed for Game 4.

Despite the injury setbacks, the Oilers managed to pull off a commanding 4-1 win. That speaks volumes about their depth, leadership, and determination to push through adversity.

Next Steps as Oilers Eye the Stanley Cup Final

With a 3-1 series lead over the Stars, the Oilers are one win away from advancing to the Stanley Cup Final. Game 5 will take place in Dallas, and all eyes will be on whether Hyman will be available.

His status remains uncertain, but his presence — or absence — could be a game-changer as the series continues.

Oilers fans will be hoping for positive news on Hyman in the coming days. Meanwhile, the team must stay focused and prepare for a tough battle ahead.

Edmonton Rises to the Challenge

Even with injuries piling up, the Oilers continue to show why they’re among the NHL’s elite. The resilience and leadership in the locker room are helping them weather the storm. But losing a powerhouse like Hyman, even temporarily, is no small hurdle.

As the Oilers inch closer to the Stanley Cup Final, health and depth will be more important than ever.
