It was a night to remember. Shreyas Iyer's one-man demolition crew, powering Punjab Kings (PBKS) into the IPL 2025 final. Against Mumbai Indians (MI)—a team renowned for its clutch performances—Iyer unleashed his wrath and walked away unbeaten on 87 off just 41 balls.

Locked In and Unstoppable

From the moment Iyer took the crease, he looked like a man possessed. Every move screamed focus. Every shot was a statement. He punished MI’s fast bowlers with precise brutality. Slot balls, yorkers, and even well-directed bouncers were all dispatched with ease.

What stood out? His uncanny ability to anticipate, adapt, and accelerate. MI’s top bowlers—Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult—had no answers. Even their well-executed yorkers were nudged into gaps for boundaries. Iyer played them with finesse, showing just why he’s one of the most complete T20 batters today.

A Personal Vendetta Fueled the Fire

Behind the calm face, there was a storm. Earlier in the game, Iyer was visibly furious with teammate Shashank Singh for a lazy run. His intense glare and sharp words captured how seriously he took the moment. This was more than just a semi-final. It was personal, driven by pride and past memories.

Breaking MI’s Aura

MI had never lost a 200-plus chase in IPL playoffs history. With an 18-7 record in knockouts, they entered the match as clear favorites. They had just knocked out Gujarat Titans, the most consistent side in recent years. But none of that mattered to Iyer.

He dismantled their strategy, capitalized on every error, and turned pressure into opportunity. MI’s death-over tactics, including the surprise inclusion of Reece Topley, backfired terribly. Iyer pounced, transforming a 19-off-15 start into a jaw-dropping 87 not out.

Bowling Execution: MI’s Achilles’ Heel

Mahela Jayawardene, MI's head coach, admitted post-match that the team simply failed to execute their plans. They missed yorkers, overpitched slot balls, and gave Iyer far too many freebies. Six of Iyer’s eight sixes came off deliveries that should never have been bowled.

While MI had a tactical reason to hold back Mitchell Santner due to left-handers, the plan crumbled as Nehal Wadhera survived multiple chances. Dropped catches and misjudgments piled up, and by the time MI could react, the game was out of reach.

Captaincy Masterclass From Iyer

This wasn’t just about Iyer’s batting. His captaincy stood out too. He backed Yuzvendra Chahal despite Suryakumar Yadav attacking him early. Chahal returned to dismiss SKY in his final over—a crucial moment in the match.

Later, Iyer turned to Azmatullah Omarzai at the death instead of the obvious choice, Vijaykumar Vyshak. The gamble paid off as Omarzai removed Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir, sealing MI’s fate.

Rain Drama, Wet Ball, and a Fightback

The game was delayed by rain, creating wet outfield conditions. MI posted a challenging total despite the interruptions, aided by dew and some sloppy PBKS bowling. But Iyer’s clinical chase turned it into a night PBKS fans won’t forget.

Despite fielding a wet ball, the PBKS bowlers hung in. They fought back in patches and delivered just enough control for Iyer to finish the job.

Still No Century, But a Statement Made

Iyer’s unbeaten 87 meant he still hasn’t scored an IPL century. Yet, he timed his peak performance perfectly. With 23 runs coming off the final over—without him facing a single ball—PBKS sealed an 11-run win.

He pushed for a second run late in the innings just to get back on strike. He didn’t get the chance, but it showed his hunger. His leadership, grit, and form brought PBKS to the final on the very pitch where they began their IPL 2025 campaign.

Next Stop: Final Showdown vs RCB

Now, Iyer faces another challenge—Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). A team that has beaten PBKS twice this season. A team led by Virat Kohli, Iyer’s India teammate and one-time co-sufferer in a painful 2023 moment at the same venue.

Kohli remains RCB’s beloved icon. Iyer, despite leading multiple teams to IPL finals, hasn’t found that kind of loyalty from any franchise. He’s also not yet earned a stable spot in India’s T20I side.

But on this night, none of that mattered.

Shreyas Iyer silenced doubters, crushed MI, and booked his spot in the final once again. Whether or not he finds long-term love from a franchise, one thing is clear—he’s one of the fiercest competitors the IPL has ever seen.
