The Winnipeg Blue Bombers launched their 2025 season with authority, overpowering the BC Lions 34-20 in a thrilling Week 2 showdown at Princess Auto Stadium. Despite missing two key stars—quarterback Zach Collaros and running back Brady Oliveira—the Bombers showed depth, discipline, and determination in their pursuit of a sixth straight Grey Cup appearance.

Fast Start Sets the Tone

Winnipeg wasted no time. Their opening drive was a statement: four plays, 80 yards, and a 20-yard touchdown strike from Chris Streveler to Nic Demski. Just two minutes and 29 seconds into the game, the Bombers had a 7-0 lead and never looked back.

Brady Oliveira’s explosive 43-yard run teased what could’ve been a big game. But shortly after, the reigning Most Outstanding Canadian exited with an upper-body injury, forcing rookie Matthew Peterson into a spotlight he eagerly embraced.

Peterson Steps Up in Oliveira’s Absence

With Oliveira sidelined, the pressure was on Peterson—and the rookie delivered in spectacular fashion. Rushing for 130 yards on 23 carries and scoring a memorable 38-yard touchdown, he became the CFL’s top rusher so far this season. His performance was not just efficient—it was energizing.

Streveler Takes Command

Filling in for suspended Zach Collaros, Chris Streveler showcased leadership and versatility. He completed 15 of 24 passes for 246 yards and threw three touchdowns, connecting twice with Demski and once with breakout receiver Keric Wheatfall. Though he had one interception, Streveler more than proved he can command the offense under pressure.

Defensive Brilliance from Winnipeg

The Bombers' defence was relentless. Marquise Bridges led the charge with two interceptions, including a game-clinching pick in the fourth quarter.

Winnipeg’s pressure consistently disrupted BC quarterback Nathan Rourke, who finished 12-of-27 with 249 passing yards, one touchdown, and an interception. Rourke added 58 rushing yards but was forced to the sideline in the final quarter due to discomfort.

Willie Jefferson, one of the CFL’s most feared defenders, created constant pressure, helping the defence hold BC to just three points in the first quarter.

Big Plays on Both Sides

While Winnipeg led for the entire game, BC’s offense showed flashes.

Receiver Keon Hatcher turned a 40-yard catch into a 77-yard touchdown, showcasing his speed and the blocking support from teammate Stanley Berryhill. Ayden Eberhardt also made a splash with a 49-yard reception that helped set up Rourke’s rushing touchdown.

But each time the Lions sparked momentum, Winnipeg answered. Whether through Streveler’s precision, Peterson’s ground control, or big-time defensive stands, the Bombers remained in control.

Special Teams Impact

Winnipeg kicker Sergio Castillo added critical points with field goals from 49 and 50 yards, though he did miss a late 47-yarder and a point-after attempt that bounced off the upright. Punter Jamieson Sheahan contributed with a precision kick that earned the Bombers a single point.

On the return front, Michael Chris-Ike delivered a bone-jarring hit that forced a BC fumble, recovered by Trey Vaval—another momentum-stealing moment by Winnipeg’s special teams.

Late-Game Lockdown

With Rourke sidelined, BC turned to veteran quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. But he too struggled under pressure. His deep pass attempt sailed over his receiver, and Bridges was there once more, grabbing his second interception of the game to seal the win.

Looking Ahead: Rematch on the Horizon

The Blue Bombers’ balanced domination—offense, defense, and special teams—proves they are still the team to beat in the CFL. The Lions will get a chance at revenge soon, with an instant rematch scheduled for Week 3 on June 21 at Save-on-Foods Field in BC Place.

With stars emerging and resilience on full display, the Bombers are clearly back—and perhaps better than ever.
