Donald Trump arrives at Huis ten Bosch Palace for a dinner during the NATO Summit 2025 in The Hague on June 24, 2025.
A shaky calm has settled over the Middle East after Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire brokered by Qatar. While the truce seems to be holding for now, tensions remain high, with accusations of violations from both sides. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has arrived in the Netherlands for a NATO summit, making headlines with his fiery remarks and controversial decisions.
Ceasefire Holds, but Accusations Fly
The Israel-Iran ceasefire took effect Tuesday, aiming to halt nearly two weeks of escalating violence. However, within hours, both countries accused each other of breaking the terms. Israel reported intercepting two missiles allegedly fired from Iran.
Tehran denied the claim. In retaliation, Israel launched strikes, briefly reigniting fears of full-scale war.
Despite this rocky start, both nations have agreed to uphold the truce, for now. Past ceasefires in the region have been short-lived, so skepticism remains.
Trump Slams Both Sides, Targets Israel
Speaking from the Netherlands, Trump did not hold back. He criticized both nations for their actions but was especially critical of Israel.
“We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f*ck they’re doing,” Trump said bluntly.
He reportedly had a “firm” conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Tuesday morning. Following their discussion, Israel paused further strikes, according to Netanyahu’s office.
U.S. Intelligence Questions Trump's Claims
A CNN exclusive revealed that early U.S. intelligence assessments contradict Trump’s statement that Iran’s nuclear facilities were “obliterated.” Instead, analysts believe the recent American strikes may have only delayed Iran’s nuclear development by a few months.
The White House confirmed the report’s existence but dismissed its conclusions. Trump doubled down on social media, claiming Iran’s nuclear sites were “COMPLETELY DESTROYED!”
Secret Briefings Postponed
Adding to the political drama, the Trump administration abruptly postponed two classified briefings scheduled for Congress. These were meant to provide updates on the military actions and ceasefire developments.
Democrats expressed frustration over the delay, demanding answers. However, many Republicans stood behind the president, signalling continued support for his Middle East policy.
Violence in Gaza Persists
While Israel and Iran observe an uneasy truce, violence continues in Gaza. A deadly bomb blast on Tuesday killed seven Israeli soldiers, the army confirmed.
That same day, 21 Palestinians waiting for aid were killed by Israeli fire, according to health officials in Gaza. The victims were gathered near a humanitarian aid center supported by both Israel and the U.S. The center has faced repeated chaos and tragedy since its opening last month.
Israel Warns of Forceful Response
Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, warned that any breach of the ceasefire would be met with force.
Speaking to the UN Security Council, Danon thanked Trump for facilitating the ceasefire and stated Israel had delivered a "severe blow" to Iranian military assets.
Iran Thanks Qatar, Despite Gulf Tensions
Iran’s UN ambassador Amir-Saeid Iravani publicly thanked Qatar for its diplomatic role in halting Israeli strikes. His comments came just a day after Iran launched an attack on a U.S. airbase located in Qatar, highlighting the region’s tangled alliances.
Qatar’s Prime Minister reportedly played a key role in securing Iran’s approval for the ceasefire, allowing Trump to announce it via social media.
Hundreds Arrested in Iran for Spying
Amid the 12-day conflict, Iran claims to have arrested 700 individuals accused of spying for Israel. State-run Fars News Agency reported that these “mercenaries” were engaged in espionage and sabotage operations.
Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, acknowledged the presence of undercover agents operating within Iran. The spy network, known as Operation Rising Lion, reportedly prepared drone attacks from inside Iranian territory.
The Iranian government has since launched a crackdown on media and online activity, arresting citizens accused of supporting Israel online and creating a new prosecutor’s unit to monitor digital spaces.
Multiple executions of alleged Israeli agents have been reported by Iranian outlets.
A Truce on Thin Ice
The Israel-Iran ceasefire may be holding today, but deep mistrust and conflicting agendas make its future uncertain.
President Trump’s role in brokering the truce has drawn global attention, but his bold claims and policy shifts continue to stir controversy at home and abroad. As NATO leaders gather and Gaza bleeds, the world watches anxiously to see whether this fragile peace will hold or collapse.
