Among the 83 Canadians recently named to the Order of Canada are former NHL coach Ted Nolan, author Miriam Toews, former top public health official Theresa Tam, scholar Elizabeth Epperly, and former UFC champion Georges St-Pierre.
Eighty-three people have been added to the Order of Canada. Their names were released just a day before Canada Day. The Governor General approved the list back in April. These people have been honoured for their service, talent, and efforts in shaping Canada.
Governor General Mary Simon said their work inspires the country and brings hope.
Top Honours Go to Manley and Doolittle
Two people received the highest honour—Companion of the Order of Canada. One is John Manley, a former deputy prime minister. He was recognized for building connections between business, government, and community groups. He also pushed for leadership diversity and helped guide major public policies.
The other top honour went to molecular biologist W. Ford Doolittle from Halifax. He gained praise for his work in science and research.
Public Health Leaders Recognized
Dr. Theresa Tam and Dr. Bonnie Henry were both made Officers of the Order. Dr. Tam led Canada’s public health team during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her efforts focused on making health care fair for everyone.
Dr. Henry helped manage British Columbia’s pandemic response. Her decades of service to public health were also highlighted.
David Jones, the country’s first chief public health officer, also earned the Officer title. He helped build Canada’s public health agency.
Contributions in Many Fields
Other new Officers include lawyer and author Maureen McTeer, who fought for gender rights and health policies. Dr. Peter Rosenbaum improved how children with disabilities receive care. Actor Tonya Williams was honoured for her push to include more racialized voices in the film and TV world.
The Order has three levels—Member, Officer, and Companion. Most people on this list became Members, which is the starting level.
One person was promoted to a higher level for their continued success. Another was added as an honorary member.
Famous Names Also Included
Marc-André Blanchard, soon to be chief of staff to the prime minister, joined the list. He was praised for his work in law and economics.
Former UFC fighter Georges St-Pierre also became a Member. His foundation supports kids, stops bullying, promotes fitness, and funds scholarships.
Donald Campbell, who helped create the NAFTA trade deal in 1994, was also added. He worked closely with the U.S. and played a key role in global trade talks.

Some past honorees joined a special ceremony on Canada Day in Ottawa. Actor Ryan Reynolds and singer Heather Rankin, named Officers in 2024, attended the event.
Others like Deantha Rae Edmunds, broadcaster Scott Oake, and author Kim Thúy Ly Thanh also joined the celebration.
