The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) has secured its place in the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup final. On Wednesday night, the team defeated Guatemala 2-1 in a high-energy semifinal clash. Rising star Diego Luna stole the show with two early goals, pushing the Americans one step closer to regional glory.

Luna Lights Up the Scoreboard Early

The game kicked off with intensity and speed. Just four minutes in, Diego Luna opened the scoring with a brilliant strike, setting the tone for the match. Eleven minutes later, Luna struck again, showcasing his quick footwork and calm finishing to double the USMNT’s lead.

Malik Tillman provided the crucial assist for the second goal, threading a perfect pass through the middle. Luna controlled it, beat a defender, and fired the ball past the Guatemalan goalkeeper. His performance earned him the Man of the Match title and roaring praise from fans and teammates alike.

Speaking after the game, Luna said, “It’s about finding rhythm and having the freedom from the coaching staff. Knowing my teammates trust me allows me to focus on my creativity and the ball.”

Guatemala Fights Back in the Second Half

Despite trailing 2-0 at halftime, Guatemala refused to give up. In the 80th minute, Olger Escobar narrowed the margin with a clean finish, thanks to an assist from Arquímides Ordóñez. It was Escobar’s second goal of the tournament and gave Guatemala a late surge of momentum.

In stoppage time, Guatemala nearly equalized. José Morales fired a shot that seemed destined for the net, but American goalkeeper Matt Freese made a critical save to preserve the lead and, ultimately, the victory.

High Tension and Plenty of Yellow Cards

The semifinal wasn’t short on drama. As the game progressed, emotions ran high and yellow cards were handed out frequently.
Yellow Card Summary:

Chris Richards (USA) – 45’+1

Stheven Robles (Guatemala) – 49’

Diego Luna (USA) – 51’

Matt Freese (USA) – 77’

Players will now need to tread carefully, as a second yellow card would mean suspension from the upcoming final.

A First-Half Dominance That Set the Tone

The first half ended with USMNT leading 2-0, controlling possession and dictating the pace. While Guatemala struggled to find openings, the U.S. team remained organized and aggressive.

Chris Richards received a yellow card in stoppage time before the half, but it didn’t shake the team’s rhythm.

Road Ahead: Final Awaits Against Mexico or Honduras

With the win, the USMNT now waits to face either Mexico or Honduras in the final. Their semifinal clash is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET on FS1.
Fans are already buzzing about a possible USA vs. Mexico final — a classic Gold Cup showdown that promises fireworks. However, Honduras could still crash the party with a surprise.

Diego Luna – The Heart of the Semifinal

This semifinal will be remembered for Luna’s breakout performance. Two goals in 15 minutes, composure under pressure, and pure flair made the difference.

He has now scored in back-to-back games and is quickly becoming one of the USMNT’s brightest stars in the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Final Whistle: The USMNT’s 2-1 win over Guatemala sends them into the Gold Cup final full of confidence and momentum. With Diego Luna leading the charge and Matt Freese guarding the net, the U.S. team looks more than ready for the ultimate test ahead.
