Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Brent Burns warms up before the team's NHL game against the Nashville Predators, Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023, in Nashville, Tenn.
Brent Burns, the seasoned NHL defenseman, is heading west. The 40-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche, the team officially announced on Wednesday.
This move adds veteran strength and experience to the Avalanche’s blue line. The deal includes a base salary of $1 million, with the potential to earn an additional $3 million in performance-based bonuses, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Brent Burns Brings Grit and Experience to Avalanche Defense
Burns, known for his rugged play and offensive skills, spent the last three seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. Despite playing every game — 246 regular season and 41 playoff appearances — his offensive production dipped last year.
He posted just six goals and 23 assists, marking his lowest numbers since the shortened 2020-21 season.
While his point total declined, Burns’ value goes beyond the scoresheet. He remains a dependable, physical presence on the ice and a respected leader in the locker room.
Burns' Ironman Streak Still Intact
One of the standout features of Burns’ career is his incredible durability. He currently holds the longest active ironman streak in the NHL — skating in 925 consecutive games. That streak came close to ending during Carolina’s final regular-season game against the Ottawa Senators. Burns logged just 24 seconds of ice time in the 7–5 loss but managed to keep the streak alive.
Burns is now just 139 games behind Phil Kessel’s all-time ironman record. With the 2025 season ahead, Avalanche fans will be watching closely to see if he continues his march toward history.
A Decorated Career with Numbers to Back It Up
Over his illustrious NHL journey, Brent Burns has proven to be a consistent offensive force from the blue line. He has racked up 910 career points, including 261 goals and 649 assists across 1,497 games. In the playoffs, he’s tallied 24 goals and 56 assists in 135 contests.
His versatility — transitioning from forward earlier in his career to a top-pairing defenseman — has made him one of the most unique players of his generation. The Avalanche now hope to tap into that wealth of experience as they push for another deep playoff run.
Avalanche Continue to Bolster Roster for 2025 Push
With Burns in the fold, the Avalanche are signaling their intent to contend again in 2025. After a strong 2024 campaign, adding a seasoned blueliner like Burns could offer both stability and a mentorship role for younger defensemen.
While expectations around his scoring might be tempered, Colorado values what he can bring defensively and in the locker room. His presence could be key during high-pressure playoff moments where experience often makes the difference.
What This Means for Colorado and Burns
For the Avalanche, signing Brent Burns on a short-term, low-risk deal is a smart depth move. It gives them flexibility while potentially adding a big return on investment if Burns hits his bonus targets.
For Burns, it’s an opportunity to chase a Stanley Cup with a legitimate contender. After nearly 1,500 games and years of elite-level play, he remains driven and determined.
