Chris Gotterup's win on Sunday earned him one of the final spots into next week's major championship.

Chris Gotterup held his nerve on a tense Sunday to secure his biggest career win yet. The 25-year-old American golfer outplayed Rory McIlroy and others to claim the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open title. With this win, Gotterup earned one of the final spots in next week’s prestigious British Open at Royal Portrush.

Breakthrough Moment at The Renaissance Club

Gotterup carded a final-round 66 at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, finishing 14-under and two strokes ahead of McIlroy and Marco Penge. The victory earned him $1.57 million and marked his second career PGA Tour title, following his first win at the Myrtle Beach Classic last year.

Fighting back tears in his CBS interview, Gotterup said, “It’s just awesome. I can’t wait to see everyone, and I’m playing in the Open next week.”

Friday Surge Set the Stage

Gotterup’s charge began on Friday when he fired a stunning 9-under 61, tying the course record. That performance gave him a two-shot lead heading into the weekend. However, Saturday brought challenges. His even-par 70 allowed McIlroy to close the gap after a solid 66 from the Northern Irishman.

Going into the final round, both were tied, setting the stage for an electrifying Sunday.

Calm Under Pressure

Despite a bogey on the opening hole, Gotterup showed remarkable composure. He went 2-under on the front nine, then added birdies on holes 10 and 12. His tee shot on the par-3 12th landed within 3 feet — a decisive moment in the round.

While Gotterup rose to the occasion, McIlroy struggled to capitalize. He made par on his final 10 holes, missing multiple birdie chances — including a golden opportunity at the par-5 16th where he missed the green by inches but failed to convert.

Gotterup birdied the 16th to extend his lead to two. Walking down the 18th fairway, both he and McIlroy shared a smile, knowing the contest was essentially decided. Gotterup two-putted for par, securing the title.

A Win That Changes Everything

With this triumph, Gotterup becomes only the sixth American to win the Scottish Open. His victory lifts him from obscurity to relevance in the golf world. He jumped to No. 39 in the FedEx Cup standings and will now appear in the FedExCup Playoffs and next season’s Tour Signature Events.

Starting the week ranked No. 158 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), Gotterup is expected to leap significantly. He had made the cut in 13 of 22 starts this season but hadn't posted a top-10 finish until now.

His T23 finish at the U.S. Open last month had been his best performance in a major. Now, he heads to Royal Portrush not just as a participant, but as a contender.

McIlroy Falls Short

McIlroy was chasing his 30th PGA Tour win, which would have made him just the 11th player with that milestone and at least five majors. After winning the Masters this season and completing the career grand slam, he was hoping to add another title to his stellar year.

Despite a T6 at the Travelers Championship and a top-20 at the U.S. Open, this loss highlights the inconsistency he’s faced post-Masters.

What’s Next for Gotterup?

The win in Scotland doesn’t just give Gotterup entry into the British Open — it signals the start of something bigger. With confidence riding high, improved rankings, and a spot secured in upcoming premier events, Chris Gotterup is officially a player to watch.

Golf has found its newest breakout star, and he’s just getting started.
