Attempts to put out a fire following a Russian attack in Kharkiv region, Ukraine

Russia escalated its air assault on Ukraine overnight, launching a barrage of drones and missiles that left at least 15 people injured. The coordinated strikes hit four major Ukrainian cities, with energy infrastructure bearing the brunt of the attack. The move further intensifies Moscow’s pressure ahead of a looming peace deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Cities Under Fire: Energy Infrastructure in Crosshairs

Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched a total of 400 Shahed drones, decoy drones, and a ballistic missile. The cities hit included Kharkiv in the northeast, President Zelenskyy’s hometown Kryvyi Rih in central Ukraine, Vinnytsia in the west, and Odesa in the south.

Most of the attacks appeared to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, disrupting critical services and putting civilians at increased risk. Ukrainian officials said emergency response teams are working to restore services and treat the injured.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, saying, “Russia does not change its strategy. To counter this terror, we need stronger air defenses, more interceptors, and unshakable resolve.”

Trump’s Ultimatum: A 50-Day Countdown

The latest attack came just weeks ahead of a September 2 deadline set by President Trump. He has demanded that Russia agree to a peace deal within 50 days or face severe new sanctions from Washington.

While Trump has recently taken a tougher stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin, critics argue that the deadline might actually encourage further aggression from the Kremlin. Some U.S. lawmakers and European officials fear Putin could use this period to seize more Ukrainian territory before entering peace negotiations.

So far, two previous rounds of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia have yielded little progress beyond prisoner swaps. A third round has yet to be scheduled.

U.S. Weapons, But European Funding

In a firm message earlier this week, Trump pledged to send more military aid to Ukraine, including vital Patriot air defense systems. However, he clarified that the cost would be shouldered by European countries.

That announcement was met with mixed reactions. While Ukrainian and European leaders welcomed the renewed U.S. commitment, many hoped Washington would share the financial burden.

Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, said, “We welcome President Trump’s announcement to send more weapons to Ukraine, although we would like to see the U.S. share the burden. If we pay for these weapons, it’s our support.”

Europe Steps In With Massive Economic Aid Proposal

Meanwhile, the European Union moved forward with its own plans to support Ukraine’s struggling economy. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed a €100 billion ($116 billion) aid package as part of the EU’s long-term budget.

The aid is intended to help stabilize Ukraine’s economy, rebuild infrastructure, and support the country’s aspirations for EU membership. The proposed funds will not be used for military purposes and still need approval from all 27 EU member states and the European Parliament.

Putin’s Strategy: Wait Out the West

Analysts believe Putin continues to count on a long-term strategy of attrition. According to the Institute for the Study of War, the Russian president is betting that he can make gradual territorial gains and eventually outlast Ukraine’s defense capabilities and the West’s resolve.

The war has already taken a devastating toll. The United Nations estimates more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians have died, with tens of thousands of soldiers killed along the 1,000-kilometer front line.

As the September deadline approaches, the world watches closely. Whether Putin will yield under the threat of sanctions—or double down—remains uncertain. What’s clear is that Ukraine, bruised but defiant, continues to fight for its sovereignty.
