In a strategic move ahead of the next NHL season, the Montreal Canadiens have officially signed centerman Joe Veleno to a one-year, one-way contract. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes, confirming the team’s commitment to adding depth and experience to their forward line.

A Homegrown Talent Returns

Joe Veleno, a Montreal native, is making his way back to his roots. The 25-year-old brings with him five seasons of NHL experience and a reputation for being a reliable two-way forward. Last season, he suited up for both the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks, registering a combined total of 17 points across 74 games.

Strong Finish with Chicago Blackhawks

After being traded to the Blackhawks at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, Veleno made an immediate impact in Chicago. In just 18 games, he notched seven points—three goals and four assists. His short stint with the Blackhawks showcased his versatility and offensive instincts, making him a valuable late-season addition.

Building on Career Milestones

Veleno's NHL journey began in the 2020-21 season. Since then, he has played in 306 regular-season games, collecting 81 points from 38 goals and 43 assists. He also has 98 penalty minutes to his name, a testament to his physical style of play.

His most productive campaign came in 2023-24 when he recorded career highs across the board—12 goals, 16 assists, and 28 points. That season solidified his status as a dependable bottom-six forward with upside.

First-Round Pick with Growing Value

Veleno was originally selected by the Detroit Red Wings as the 30th overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft. The 6-foot-1, 201-pound forward entered the league with high expectations due to his performance in junior hockey and his rare "exceptional player" status in the QMJHL.

Though he hasn’t yet become a star, Veleno has carved out a niche as a hard-working, defensively responsible centerman who can chip in offensively when needed. His consistent play and improving stats suggest he still has room to grow in the right system.

Canadiens Focused on Forward Depth

By bringing Joe Veleno into the fold, the Canadiens are not just adding a familiar face—they're reinforcing their forward unit with a player who understands the pressure and pride of playing in Montreal.

The one-way nature of the contract indicates the team expects Veleno to be a regular on the NHL roster throughout the 2025-26 season. With his combination of youth, experience, and local roots, Veleno could become a valuable contributor as the Canadiens continue to develop their young core.

What This Means for the Canadiens

The Canadiens are clearly aiming to balance their roster with a mix of veteran presence and promising youth. Veleno’s signing reflects a smart, low-risk investment in a player with over 300 games of NHL experience and the potential for even more offensive output in a structured system.

Whether anchoring the fourth line or stepping up during injuries, Joe Veleno brings flexibility and depth to Montreal’s lineup. His familiarity with the Canadian market and his hunger to prove himself further make this one-year contract a mutually beneficial deal.

With training camp just around the corner, all eyes will be on Veleno as he begins a new chapter—this time in his hometown, wearing the iconic Canadiens jersey.
