Detroit Lions safety Morice Norris Jr. suffered a serious injury during Friday’s preseason clash with the Atlanta Falcons. The game was suspended following the incident, which took place late in the fourth quarter.
The 24-year-old defensive back is now in stable condition. According to the Lions, Norris has full feeling and movement in his arms and legs. He is being monitored overnight at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for precautionary observation.
Coach Shares Concern and Hope
Lions head coach Dan Campbell addressed the media shortly after the game was called off.
"Thoughts and prayers are with Mo Norris," Campbell said. "We received positive news that he’s at the hospital and doing better. Something like this puts everything into perspective."
Campbell confirmed that Norris was able to speak and move after the injury, offering reassurance to worried fans and teammates.
Game Stopped With Lions Leading
Referee Shawn Hochuli announced the suspension at 9:35 p.m. ET, with 6:19 left in the game. At that point, the Lions held a 17-10 lead.
The injury occurred after a heavy hit to Norris’s head and neck area. Medical staff immediately immobilized him on the field and loaded him into an ambulance.
Emotional Moment for Both Teams
The atmosphere inside the stadium turned somber. Campbell quickly gathered his players on the sideline. Soon after, both Lions and Falcons players came together at midfield, showing unity and support for Norris.
With 14:50 remaining in the fourth quarter, players began letting the clock run. The official suspension followed a few minutes later.
Rising Player’s Career Put on Pause
Norris, a Fresno State graduate, joined the Lions in spring 2024 as an undrafted free agent. The young safety appeared in two games last season.
On Friday, before the incident, Norris had recorded three tackles and was showing promise during the preseason. His future remains bright, but recovery will now take priority.
