The Toronto Blue Jays received a major scare on Friday night when outfielder Daulton Varsho exited their matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers after being struck on the right hand. Thankfully, initial X-rays showed no fracture, offering the team a sigh of relief despite their 7-2 defeat.
Scary Moment at the Plate
The incident occurred in the seventh inning when Brewers reliever Aaron Ashby unleashed a 96.9 mph sinker. The pitch tailed inside, clipping Varsho on his right pinkie finger as he tried to hold back his swing on a 2-2 count.
Varsho immediately dropped his bat in visible pain and was attended to by the Blue Jays’ medical staff at home plate. After a brief evaluation, he was pulled from the game and replaced by Myles Straw in center field.
Manager Provides Injury Update
Speaking after the game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider reassured fans about the outcome.
“We’ll see how he is tomorrow,” Schneider said. “He’s obviously sore, but we’re not going to push it. The good news is his X-rays are negative.”
The team will continue to monitor Varsho’s condition as they prepare for the remainder of their series against the Brewers.
Injury Woes in 2025 Season
The 29-year-old outfielder has endured a frustrating, injury-interrupted 2025 campaign. He began the season on the injured list following off-season shoulder surgery. Despite returning in late April with an immediate offensive spark, his momentum was halted by a grade-1 hamstring strain that sidelined him for two months.
Since rejoining the lineup on August 1, Varsho has been one of Toronto’s most productive bats. Over just 23 games, he has launched seven home runs and driven in 22 RBIs, showcasing the kind of impact the Blue Jays have missed during his absences.
Power and Defense Make Him Indispensable
While Varsho is most celebrated for his elite defense in center field—ranking among the league leaders—his bat has been equally impressive in limited action. Despite the interruptions, he carries an unqualified .574 slugging percentage, placing him among MLB’s best power hitters this season.
Before Friday’s injury scare, Varsho also led the team in home runs during his early-season stretch, collecting eight long balls before his hamstring setback. His combination of power and defensive consistency has made him one of Toronto’s most valuable players, even with limited availability.
Blue Jays Hoping for Stability
For a team battling inconsistency and injuries throughout the year, the Blue Jays cannot afford to lose Varsho again. His return earlier this month had injected fresh energy into the lineup, helping them stay competitive in a tough playoff race.
Although the Blue Jays dropped Friday’s contest 7-2, the bigger storyline was Varsho’s health. With X-rays ruling out serious damage, Toronto hopes he can avoid another extended absence and continue his resurgence.
What’s Next for Varsho and Toronto
The Blue Jays’ medical staff will likely re-evaluate Varsho on Saturday to determine his availability for the remainder of the Brewers series. If the soreness subsides quickly, he could return to the lineup sooner rather than later.
For now, Toronto fans can breathe easier knowing that their star outfielder avoided the worst-case scenario. In a season where injuries have already derailed him multiple times, staying healthy down the stretch will be crucial for both Varsho and the Blue Jays’ playoff hopes.
