Lionel Messi delivered an emotional and unforgettable performance in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Venezuela in Buenos Aires. Playing what could be his final World Cup qualifier on home soil, the 38-year-old superstar scored twice and came close to a hat trick.

Emotional Start for Messi

Messi’s night began with visible emotion. Tears welled in his eyes during the warmups, and he stood with his three sons as the national anthem played. Despite the heavy atmosphere, the Argentine captain managed to stay composed once the game began.

Argentina Dominates Venezuela

The defending World Cup champions, already qualified for the 2026 tournament, controlled the match at Mas Monumental Stadium on September 4. Messi opened the scoring in the 39th minute after receiving a clever assist from Julián Álvarez. The forward had a chance himself but unselfishly set up his captain, who chipped the ball into the net past Venezuela’s defense.

Argentina doubled their lead in the 76th minute. Lautaro Martínez headed the ball home after Messi initiated the play with a free kick. Just four minutes later, Messi struck again. Thiago Almada spotted his captain in the penalty area and provided a perfect pass. Messi calmly slotted it in with his left foot, sealing the victory.

Messi Almost Secures Hat Trick

In the 89th minute, Messi thought he had completed his hat trick. He found the back of the net once again, but the goal was disallowed for offside. The crowd erupted anyway, celebrating another magical night from the legendary forward.

This match marked Messi’s first goals for Argentina in nearly a year. His last scoring performance came on October 15, 2024, when he netted a hat trick and added two assists in a 6-0 win over Bolivia.

A Special Night for Argentina’s Captain

After the final whistle, Messi admitted the occasion felt unique. “I don’t want it to end, but I know the moment is close,” Messi said. “It was a very special day for me.”

At 38, Messi has not yet confirmed whether he will play in the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He said the decision will come later, but he treated this game as possibly his last opportunity to play in front of his home fans.

Historic Milestone in World Cup Qualifiers

The match also marked Messi’s 72nd World Cup qualifier appearance, the most by any player in South American history. His longevity and consistency have cemented his status as one of the greatest to ever play the game.

Coach Scaloni Keeps Door Open

Despite Messi’s hints, Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni suggested the legend’s journey in Argentina may not be over. “Surely, it won’t be his last game here,” Scaloni said before the match. “If he decides it is, we will make sure he gets another one. He deserves it.”

Fans Witness Another Historic Moment

For Argentine fans, the night was more than just a qualifier. It was a celebration of Messi’s extraordinary career and his lasting bond with his country. From the anthem to his brace and near hat trick, the evening had the atmosphere of a farewell, even if Messi has not said goodbye yet.

Final Score: Argentina 3, Venezuela 0

  • Messi scored in the 39th and 80th minutes.
  • Lautaro Martínez added the second in the 76th minute.
  • Messi’s late third goal was ruled offside.

Whether or not it was his final match in Argentina, Lionel Messi once again gave fans a night they will never forget.
