Italian designer Giorgio Armani, one of the world’s most celebrated names in fashion, died in Milan at the age of 91. His fashion group confirmed his death on Thursday, saying he passed away surrounded by family.
“It is with great sadness that the Armani group announces the death of its creator, founder and indefatigable engine: Giorgio Armani,” the statement read. The group also pledged to continue his work “with respect, responsibility and love.”
Funeral and Public Tribute
Following Armani’s wishes, his funeral will remain private. However, the public may pay their respects at the Armani Teatro in Milan, where a burning chapel will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, declared a day of mourning for the city on Monday, the day of the funeral.
A Life in Fashion
Armani launched his fashion house in 1975 and became a pioneer of modern elegance. He insisted on independence throughout his career, refusing to place his company on the stock market. His designs reshaped wardrobes for both men and women, often defined by clean lines, subtle colours, and timeless appeal.
For decades, Armani remained a dominant force on the global stage. His creations appeared in films, on red carpets, and in stores across the world. Despite declining health, he worked tirelessly until recent months, though he missed his men’s show in June and the Armani Privé presentation in Paris in July.
Tributes from Around the World
Tributes poured in from leaders, celebrities, and fellow designers. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called him “an icon, an indefatigable worker, a symbol of the best of Italy.” Donatella Versace honoured him as a “giant” of fashion. Actress Claudia Cardinale described him as “a man of immense intelligence, humanity and elegance.”
Hollywood stars also shared memories. Russell Crowe recalled losing his luggage on the way to Cannes in 1997 and buying his first Armani suit, sparking “a love story that still lasts.” Julia Roberts described him as “a true friend, a legend.”
French billionaire Bernard Arnault, head of a leading luxury group, said Armani “gave Italian elegance a global reach.” Ralph Lauren praised his humility, while Michael Kors said he “changed the way women and men around the world dress and live.”
Even animal rights groups remembered him. PETA praised his decision to stop using animal fur in his collections.
A Lasting Legacy
Armani’s impact went far beyond clothing. His name extended to hotels, restaurants, and lifestyle ventures, shaping a vision that combined style with culture and elegance. Tommy Hilfiger summed up his influence: “His vision has shaped not only fashion, but also understanding the style itself.”
