After winning four straight games following their Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers, the Detroit Lions saw their streak come to an end in Week 6 against the Kansas City Chiefs, losing on the road 30-17.
The Detroit Lions’ four-game winning streak came to an end in Week 6. On the road against the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit fell 30-17. The game stayed tight for most of the evening, but Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes proved too much for the Lions’ shorthanded secondary.
Here’s a breakdown of two winners and two losers from the loss.
Loser:The Detroit Lions’ Cornerbacks Struggle
The Lions’ secondary faced a tough challenge from the start. Missing several starters, their margin for error shrank dramatically. A secondary relies on communication and coordination, both before and after the snap. Without it, even small mistakes can be costly.
The Chiefs exploited those gaps. Mahomes targeted the edges, used RPOs effectively, and consistently found soft spots in coverage. Miscommunication among defenders led to multiple breakdowns. Kansas City racked up 26 first-downs and converted four of nine third-down opportunities.
Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard leaned more on zone coverage than man-to-man, trying to limit mistakes. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough against the Chiefs’ fast receivers and dynamic offense.
Loser: Offensive Execution on Key Downs
Detroit’s offense had flashes of effectiveness but failed when it mattered most. On third down, the Lions converted just five of eleven attempts and turned the ball over on downs twice.
Big moments went unclaimed by the team’s star players. Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown dropped a crucial fourth-down pass, highlighting missed opportunities. Situations like these showed that the Lions needed big plays, but they didn’t materialize.
Winner: Offensive Line Holds Its Ground
Despite the loss, Detroit’s offensive line showed resilience. Early in the game, the running game was effective. The line consistently reset the line of scrimmage and opened holes for significant gains.
Quarterback Jared Goff also benefited from solid protection, allowing him to find open receivers downfield. Missing starting left tackle Taylor Decker for the second week, the line still performed admirably. Offensive line coach Hank Fraley deserves credit for preparing his unit to compete under difficult circumstances.
Winner: Sam LaPorta Shines
Tight end Sam LaPorta continued his upward trajectory. After a rookie season filled with promise and a dip in year two, LaPorta reminded fans of his talent. For the second consecutive week, he scored a highlight-reel touchdown: a one-handed, toe-tapping grab in the back of the end zone.
LaPorta has improved as a blocker and has become a reliable target for Goff, especially on third-down situations. Against Kansas City, he caught five passes for 55 yards and added the touchdown, proving his growing importance to the Lions’ offense.
