Edmonton Oilers' Curtis Lazar and Vancouver Canucks' Victor Mancini vie for the puck during first-period NHL action in Vancouver, B.C., Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025.

The Vancouver Canucks’ defensive lineup took another hit Sunday night when defenceman Victor Mancini left the game early against the Edmonton Oilers. The 23-year-old exited the bench during the second period and did not return for the third, raising fresh concerns for the already injury-depleted Canucks.

Unexpected Exit Raises Questions

Mancini logged 8 minutes and 18 seconds of ice time before his final shift ended with 5:17 left in the second frame. The reason behind his sudden departure remains unclear, and the team has yet to provide an official update.

The young blueliner had started the game as Vancouver’s sixth defenceman. However, with captain Quinn Hughes sidelined due to a lower-body injury, Mancini’s early exit has deepened the team’s defensive woes.

Canucks’ Blueline Depth Tested

Sunday’s setback couldn’t have come at a worse time. The Canucks were already scrambling for options on the back end, and Mancini’s departure has left them even thinner. The team had just recalled him from Abbotsford on Saturday to fill the gap, while prospect Tom Willander was sent down to the AHL in a corresponding move.

For Vancouver, the blueline situation now looks increasingly fragile as the season intensifies. With Hughes out and Mancini’s status uncertain, head coach Rick Tocchet may need to rely on depth players or another call-up to keep the defense steady.

From Rangers Prospect to Canucks Blueliner

Born in Hancock, Michigan, Mancini’s NHL journey has already seen significant turns. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Draft by the New York Rangers, he later joined the Canucks as part of the blockbuster trade for J.T. Miller in January 2025.

Mancini has been slowly carving out his spot on the Canucks’ roster. This season, he has appeared in four games, averaging 11:05 of ice time with a minus-2 rating. Across his 35 career NHL games, he has contributed two goals and eight assists, showing steady progress as a developing defenceman.

Tough Stretch Ahead for Vancouver

The Canucks now face a tough stretch with multiple defensive absences. While Hughes’ injury already forced lineup adjustments, Mancini’s potential setback could prompt more roster changes ahead of their next matchup.

Depth players will have to step up as Vancouver navigates this challenging phase. The team’s ability to stay competitive despite injuries will be key to maintaining their strong start to the season.

Waiting for an Update

As of now, the team has not disclosed the reason behind Mancini’s exit or his expected recovery timeline. Fans and analysts alike are keeping a close watch for updates, hoping the young defenceman’s absence won’t be long-term.

For the Canucks, whose defense is already stretched thin, any extended loss could have serious implications for their playoff hopes.
